I have a male standard poodle who really needs new dog food. He is 4 years old. Right now he is eating Hill's Science Diet but he really hates it. Sadly everything else we've tried he's turned his nose up at. Any good brands of dog food to let him try?

Also I'd like a brand that isn't really expencive. That also has been a really big problem.

Stay away from foods such as Science Diet, IAMS/Eukanuba, Pedigree, Alpo, Purina Dog Chow and other "supermarket" type foods. They are loaded with cheap fillers..corn, wheat, soy, beet pulp. Dogs aren't designed to extract nutrition form veggies/grains so it takes up to 3 times more of these type foods in order for a dog to receive adequete nutrition then it does a good quality food with plenty of meat protein.

Look for foods such as Canidae, Wellness, Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul, Innova, Solid Gold, Percise, Premium Edge just to nmae a few.
Feeding low quality food is not only poor nutrition but also poor economics.

Oh, I'm sorry, He is a STANDARD Poodle. oops!
Royal Canin Adult medium is what I feed my other big dogs. Runs about 40 a month. The thing is that they eat less of it because the ingredients are a lot higher quality. Also there is less and firmer stool to clean up.
You can also get a free sample of that as well. There are online coupons and even the buy 10 bags get one free deal from the manufacturer. Some of the bigger stores offer the 10 for 1 independently as well, so then you can sort of " double dip". It is about the same price as the Hills... hope this was finally helpful!- dd

To see what kind of dog food he likes, you can get samples off of the internet. Try that and see which sample your dog likes the best. You also might be able to get coupons so you aren't spending a lot of money for food that your dog may not even like. Just play it by ear, and if you find one that your dog likes, I would stick with that food. Hope this helps. Also maybe try Purina One for him. I know my puppy really likes the food, and it is also very inexpensive. Remember price isn't everything in a dog food. But also look at the ingredients that the dog food contains. That might also be what is keeping your dog from eating certain foods.

Nutro is a good less expensive brand of dog food. Royal canine is also a good choice if you want to try something more specialized for your breed. I personally have my dogs on a raw diet. They're noses never turn up at a chicken leg, they all have returned to their perfect weights and their coats are all exceptionally nice. Two of the things I like most about feeding raw is the dog's teeth are healthier and stay clean (no more bad dog breath!) and no more icky smelling dog kibble.
If you are interested in feeding raw I highly suggest it, dogs eat raw and only raw in the wild. They are both healthier and happier on that diet. good luck!!

Nutro Max is a great food, but it is about the same price as Science Diet. But i think it is a better quality, and most dogs seem to like it.

Just some advice for switching diets to avoid some diarrhea. Switch gradually, buy your new food while you still have some of the old food left. Start by mixing 25% of the new food with 75% of the old food for a few days, then do 50/50 for a few days, then mix 75% of the new food with 25% of the old food for a few days, Until he is completely on his new food. Just some advice to help avoid any episodes of diarrhea.

note: veggies aren't bad for a dog, dogs are omnivores as people are, and vegetables are fine for them. In fact they like veggies. My veterinarian gives her dog carrots, green beans and celery as a snack.

Science Diet nutritionally sucks anyways.

Try Natural Balance (my dogs love it)
Canidae
Wellness
Innova
Chicken Soup For the Dog Lover's Soul

These are much healthier foods too.

I use Eukanuba. My pets HATED Science diet and that food only made them poop more. We've used Eukanuba for years and they all seem to love it. Good luck.
