On New Year's Eve, I had one "hand grenade" and three "super hurricanes" (larger versions of the hurricane) on Bourbon Street. I've been trying to figure out how many standard drinks (you know, one can of beer is one standard drink, that kind of thing) I had that night. I was looking around on cocktail recipe websites to see how much alcohol was in there, but the recipes probably aren't the same, and I'm not sure exactly how big the drinks were because I didn't keep the glasses. I figured someone who's been there/lives around there would be able to tell me approximately how many drinks I had.
Any ideas?

I go to school in New Orleans and work on Bourbon St. I have seen my fair share of people who fall victim to the Hand Grenade/Hurricane mixture. Let me first say that you are up and yahooing less than a week later which makes you a champion! Hand Grenades (at least in the green long stem plastic container with the hand grenade bottom) have about 8 oz. of alcohol, but the tricky part is the mixture of 5 different varieties (gin, rum, vodka, everclear, and the melon stuff- all delicious). If you went inside and got a smaller cup, then the drinks are slightly smaller. Hurricanes (assuming you got these from Pat O's) are about 6 oz. of alcohol (once again assorted- gin, 151 rum. light rum, vodka, triple sec, amaretto). They add a lot of grenadine for the color. Interesting fact that a waitress one time told me is that they use so much rum in them because when they were originally created, rum was in excess supply so the owners were able to get rum a lot easier than the other types of alcohol. I do not know how much bigger a Super Hurricane is than a regular one, but I'm glad you experimented with the bigger size. One last word of advice, next time- save the containers... they are the best NOLA souvenirs!!!

One Hand Grenade has about 8 oz of alcohol. A hurricane has about the same. The super sticky sweetness of both drinks make them have a much bigger effect since you will probably drink them faster and will feel it more in the morning. Use this to do your own math, but the real question is: "Did you know who/what/where you were in the morning?" LOL

Although I have not been to N.O. or live there, from what you describe, I would venture an educated guess around 18+ drinks, especially if they were made strong. Happy New Year and hope this helps some.

You had enough to cold cock a sperm whale, or else enough to put the Mormon Tabernacle Choir into a coma.
