My buddy and i are curious as to what all the Ohio State Highway Patrol does during the day.
As far as i know, they look for traffic violations and clean up accidents.

Also, what kind of different jobs are their within the State Patrol?
Are their undercover officers?
Drug specialists?
that sort of thing?

and we're looking at their web site right now and it's pretty vague.

SO if anybody can answer any of the questions...thanks a lot

i mean, i'm on the Ohio State Patrol Site and it doesn't answer my questions.

Again, i'm just hoping somebody who is familiar with it can help.

The highway patrol in Ohio is not only responsible for traffic enforcement on the state's highways, but also for investigation of crime in any state facility. They also have the best training of any department in the state. While it is run like a quasi-military organization, the state patrol does offer a variety of career positions.
Your best bet is to visit a local OSP post and talk to anyone who works there. If you are interested, complete the application and mail it to Columbus. If approved, you will be given a date to take a civil service test. If you score high enough, you will go through a very thorough background check. If all goes well, you may receive an appointment to the academy in Columbus. However, be prepared. The academy can be very difficult. You must be in good physical condition and be able to pass PT tests, written and oral tests, memorize every county in the state and learn every traffic law in the revised code.
You will spend time training with a seasoned trooper and when you are finally out on your own, you will patrol miles and miles of roads. Your uniform will be clean, pressed, and spotless. Also, Unless they have changed their rules, every trooper will have to qualify with their firearm shooting right handed. If you are left handed, you will need to learn. All troopers wear their firearms on their right side. This is done for uniformity. After the academy, you will be assigned to one of Ohio's 88 counties. If you get promoted, you will be transferred. (unless they changed that too) You will learn to drive all over again.
It can be a great career with a pretty decent retirement. Look into it. You may find that you like it.

Depending on the state, they can be two different agencies. In most states they are the same thing just go by a different name depending on the state. If the state has both highway patrol and state police then the state police usually perform more of a protective detail for the governor, state buildings and prisoner transports from the state courts.

e I worked highway patrol for twenty years. Ther is a heck of alot to do more then just writting tickets,. each officer is responsible for what is called beat management, which includes security checks disturbance calls traffic direction etc.. believe me there is very little free time in a busy jurisdiction, contrary to to what some think we do not spend all day at dunkin donuts
