You can buy mix with the alcohol and everything included. I recommend Chi Chi's. You can make them homemade with fresh strawberries, ice, and tequila. I use about 5 shot size servings of liquor. The rest should be ice and berries. Remember only put in as much liquor as you want and don't add too much ice or you'll eat it with a spoon. Start small, you can always add more. Oh! You'll need some sugar ( add to taste 1/2 cup?).

It would be all right, but it probably will taste way different than a margarita. Most margarita mixes are essentially sour mix, so it would be like drinking a rum and sour. I think it would be fine, but do a taste test first, don't go mixing the whole thing and then find you don't like it after wasting all that precious alcohol. Now, rum mixes well with pretty much everything so you can just go buy some sprite or coke or something and then save the marg mix until you get some tequila. If the mix has liquor in it, you can drink it by itself and use the rum with a juice or soda. Also, as a bartender I've never made a rum and sour or a margarita with rum, so I don't think it has a name.

For a great margarita, do not use sweet & sour mix/use the following formula:
1/3 good quality tequila
1/3 good quality orange liquer
1/3 fresh lime juice
shake with crushed ice in a shaker and strain into a salt rimmed glass

The simplest way to make a margarita and a pina coloda is to buy a pre made mix and follow the directions on the back. Once you get a better feel you can adjust the tastes with fresh ingredients and different types of liquor
