By the time the petroleum reserves get depleted , we will have less mechanical stuff. We can , and we are manufacturing synthetic lubricants from other sources, although they might be slightly more expensive then through by products from petroleum.
So are plastics. They can and are being manufactured from other natural rubber sources and cellulose.
Regarding fuel, we are already replacing them with ethanol, and hydrogen fuel cells.
In the future, more of our technology will be less mechanical and more electronic. Research is being done on the possibility of warp drives and ion energy and so on.
Don't worry about it. By the time, it gets depleted, we'd probably blown ourselves away, or advanced so much, that we won't have need for it, or maybe even moved to a different planet with newer resources.
Humans have always adapted and we will continue to do so.

plastics made of polymers produced from saccharides to replace plastics.
rubber can be made from fungus.

other petroleum products can be made with the use of microorganisms, how do you think they got in the ground to begin with?
hint: anaerobic respiration.

and the alternative lubricants that are already in existence will have to hit mass production, and will, if that were to happen.
right now the exxons of the world, just have to milk this petroleum thing until it is dead. Once they have a firm grip on agriculture industry, you'll see how magically all those things will all of a sudden be able to be made from agricultural crops, with the help of microorganisms.

also, in the near future, your clothing will be made of fermented cellulose!

The worlds fossil fuel supply will expire in the early 2030's. Alternative fuel sources such as Grain alcohols, Natural gas, Coal, and Eco friendly solutions like Solar, Hydro, Wind turbine will become more prodominent by demand.

Nano synthetics will surpass petroleum related products in the near future. Nanotechnology will be pushing the next industrial revolution. It will redefine materials and production for centuries.

nicely what i do no longer comprehend is that if we are keen to spend hundreds of billions to bail out huge companies, why can not we only make investments that earnings image voltaic potential or wind farms? Hydro electricty is an selection too. i understand nuclear potential isn't very commonly used on the 2nd, yet with the right technologies we ought to have secure and almost infinite potential with sufficient nuclear plant life. And construction and protecting those issues could require a significant artwork stress - so greater jobs.

The petroleum reserves are basically to be used in case of emergency.....and the military has first option of using it in case of times of war or national defense. Contrary to popular belief, there are many oilfields in the southern US that haven't been even opened up for producing yet. The Middle East is literally floating on oil. Even Alaska has huge reserves that would serve just the US for many, many years....and they haven't even been touched yet.

Once it depletes enough, people will adopt better recycling practices. As for energy...

Steorn Energy

Starlite technologies

Eneco

Hmm.. seems like a lot.

I think 2/3 of them at least are not BS.

If you care, I highly encourage you to look at each one by doing a yahoo search or wikipedia search.

Burning plastic as an energy source? lol. You really have no clue what's going on do you? But don't worry, there is at least 75 years worth of oil so it won't be OUR problem anymore, and that is a looong time to come up with an alternative.

Their chemical composition is Hydrocarbons. so if we have carbon and Hydrogen we can produce them by them chemical synthesis.
The cost will be little bit higher but we will not run out of them.
Carbon..... we can get it from timber from recyclable sources. (, (Trees and other plants)
Hydrogen... there are trillion gallons of water that we can extract Hydrogen from...
Energy for all these processes.... SUN, WIND there is plenty in all parts of the world.

So, don't worry..... there is an alternative....but for the moment....the "SEVEN SISTERS" (Oil Companies) do not want to loose their profit and "control" of the world.

You shouldn't need lubricant, you're already getting shafted by the big oil companies already. Just go to the local xxx store and get some astroglide. You'll be good to go ( and go , and go. and go)

Jet aircraft and automobiles can burn hydrogen. Prop aircraft and autos can also use batteries.

Both hydrogen & electricity can be made from nuclear power.
