Use the best bait for a start, and that can only be a live roach or rudd, or a fresh frozen one. Use a sunken float just under the surfice and fish the bait just off bottom, with a 1 - 2 oz weight holding the whole lot straight in the water. If the fish is dead give the bait a slow pull down and let the float rise back up to position the bait again. Iv drawn a pic of the rig i use in the lake or river, tight lines. This has won many a 50p bet. click on link.

You should make sure you live in a good state for pike. Minnisota and Wisconsin are the best for Pike and musky. If you want to catch a big pike you need to use big bait. I've never caught a 20 pounder but I've been close. My biggest pike was caught on a 12in sucker fish. They make special riggs for this fish, one hook through the sucker and one through the back. I've caught a ton of pike on a walleye rig with a jumbo nightcrawler on the hook. I've heard 1 oz daredevils can be deadly on pike after the spawn.
There are times of the year that your chances are greatly increased for catching a hungry gator. April and May are great months. So are September and October.

In the northern USA and southern Canada there are these big fish that look like northern pike but they get bigger and are a smoother light brown color, they are called Muskys (or Muskies).
A musky bait is just a Big lure that is used for muskys, a muskie bait can get up to 20 inches long.

Use a #5 mepps Aglia inline spinner. Pike like fast food.
Use a large 8 to 10 " shinner minnow under a bobber with a leader and 2 treble hooks.
When the fish hits let him run, he may go for 30 yards before he stops but when he does wait 2 seconds and set the hook.

we have always used large Daredevil Spoons to catch pike. We would troll them over weed beds, with good success. We had many different kinds, but yellow and orange spoons seemed to be more effective. Also try large jerk baits, a Husky Jerk maybe. Or try using a large rooster-tail spinner. They catch a lot of pike and musky with those.

i belive it if u use live fish is better than spoon or other baits..
u can catch a fish between 6" or bigger and moor it with a hook in its tail part ..dont forget it should be alive and can move ..then moor a floater ball 30" above the hook on ur line and put it in the water near the reeds and wait..u will catch a big pike ...i am an iranian fisherman and i use this way to catch the pike ...recommend u to use it
good luck,

Best bait i used to catch big pike was small brown trout, with two triple hooks wrapped round it,on the end of my trace, only used it twice and caught a 11 pounder and a 15 pounder, worked for me mate, but i had to fish for the trout, all good fun though.

try a spoon or a roostertail, remember reel in the lures fast or the northerns would snap your line.
PS northern likes to chase their food

If it has grown to 20lbs it is eating well and doesn't need your bait. You will need to go in after it my sugg. fins, snorkel and net.
