The male is now old enough to challenge her as top dog in the pack. If she's going into heat, he needs to dominate in order to breed her and don't think he won't if he gets a chance. It would seem that you are not considered top dog by either one. A potentailly dangerous situation with dogs as powerful as these. Getting her spayed and him fixed would be a big help.

First neuter the male and spay the female as soon as possible.
I have never broken up a bully breed fight, but it should work for them too.....If you are with someone the next time a fight breaks out....each of you pick a dog and grab their back legs...circling away from eachother so the dogs have to concentrate on not falling instead of biting you. Separate them for a time.
Work on training, training, training. There are some really good dog books about behavior, recognizing the warning signs and calming signals...

Get her spayed and him neutered....this will prevent an "accidental" litter between the two, which could result in behavioral, emotional, and physical defects in the pups, including severe aggression which may not show until later.
Go to http://www.friendsofanimals.org to have it done affordably, or apply through http://www.pbrc.net if you need help.
Once they are spayed and neutered, they may start getting along again. However, dog on dog aggression (dog on animal aggression) is common for these breeds, so you may have to settle for a life of "crate and rotate." No matter how well they "seem" to get along, never leave them alone unsupervised because anything can trigger a fight and it can be disastrous.

well, can you think of anything that may have triggered the fight (aside from the hormones)? were there toys or food around? if the male isn't fixed i'd recommend doing it now. the female should be spayed as well.
remove all things they can fight over and always feed them seperately.
what kind of fight was it? the noisy-and-scary-but-not-serious kind, or the cause-serious-damage kind?

That is why she got in a fight, she is trying to run him off so he will not try to mate.

well pits should be kept alone. they shouldnt be together. these are fighting dogs. they are bred to fight. that is why most of the time you will not find a pit in an animal shelter.
