People don't understand is the reason why you hear of the pit bulls mauling people is because other dogs don't make the news. Pit bulls mauling people are much more "newsworthy" of a golden retriever mauling someone. And yes, I know of a child that was 4 years old that got mauled and killed by a golden retriever. I know of people who have gotten bitten probably by every type of dog I can think of. My husband was attacked by a chihicua(sp)...obviously didn't hurt him, but the point it still there.
Dogs are still animals. Every single breed has the capability of hurting a human. The reason why you hear more of pit bulls is because that is what people WANT to hear.
Watch the dog shows, listen to the commentators who have been around different breeds. Even they say that the pit bulls are one of the BEST breeds to have around children. Why is that? They are more educated then alot of people out there on different types of dogs.
Getting any type of dog is a risk you take. But training it well, making sure it hasn't been abused, things like that will make a great pet regardless of type!
*Didn't see the post above me before I posted but he said it perfectly!!*

"Pitbulls are only mean because of the owners not raising them, not because they are born that way!" - Only idiots who don't know the breed make that argument. Having grown up around the breed and with a breeder in the family i know its GENETICS. "And guess what is the most abandoned dog breed? What breed do you see often in the shelters? Pitbulls. Why?" Depends on where you live. Its Pits in some areas. Small breeds in others. In my area? Lab mixes, small breeds and a handful of pits. I'd own one because I know what I am doing and love the breed. I can be different all on my own(and I am) without a dog.

okay so is it right for you to indanger other peoples lives just because you want to make a point and sing the praises of a pitbull? what if that pit suddenly ran after a child or another human being and killed it ? how would you feel then ? no it is a proven fact that these dogs have human agressive genes and animal agressive genes yes they be reccesive genes but they can come into play at any time. And i really dont think you care about your dogs letting them walk off a leash you are subjecting yourself to a major lawsuit and the dog being shot by police if something should snap in that dog . I believe that all pit bulls should have to be muzzled and the owners should have to carry extreme house insurance to order to cover any damage that dog should do . Please ,I am sick of people singing the praises of pit bulls and how gentle they are . I have witnessed an attack on an animal control officer ,unprovoked i might add. it is nothing i wish to ever witness again . The dog was shot and the owner was jailed for hitting the police officer for shooting his dog the monster . good luck i hope you dont ever have to witness your dog killing someone.

Really good answer from the woman who tells of the death of the 6 year old child. The owner who left the dog in the yard while working should be in jail. I too was mauled by a pit whom I had known for 5 years. I was there when it was born. The dog always showed me love and used to go for rides with me.But one night as I was leaving I put my hand on the doorknob and that was all it took, it mangled my leg and still have the scars today 25 years later. And I know how this litter of pits were raised. With plenty of love and understanding. They were never asked or allowed to be aggressive. And most importantly this dog showed me plenty of love for 5 years. You want me to believe that they are not unpredictable.Yah,okay, sure!

I hear you but those who hate pit bulls will not listen. I know I have tried and keep trying to make people hear. I have 2 dogs one a pit bull one is not. The pit is kind and gentle, loves kids, plays with small dogs and cats and his best animal friend is a ginnie pig. The little female is so aggressive we are thinking of having her pit down. And for those who think pit bulls were bred to fight go to this web site and read the history.
http://www.pitbullregistry.com/Pit%20Bull%20History.htm
There are pits out there as police dogs, they have to be well trained and not aggressive for this work. They are used as SAR dogs, one of the few people found alive at ground zero was found by a pit bull who died in the recovery. They are used as detection dogs for drugs and explosives, #1 drug dog is a pit bull named Popsicle, left to die in a freezer by a drug dealer. Now he puts them in jail. There are therapy pits that help people in old folks home and troubled and Spackle needs children. Why would they use them in these jobs if they just snap and kill people. There is over 5 million pit bulls in this country. If they are as bad as the media makes out why is there only 3 deaths caused by pit bulls in the past year.

I completely agree with you. And my mother is like your mother. I do not have a dog yet, but i want a pit bull, and she tries as hard as she can to try to convince me that 'they are unpredictable, and turn on their owners." But it is completely untrue. And for those who say pit bulls are 'vicious' dogs, i work at a vet clinic, i am yet to meet an aggressive pit bull, but i have been bit by two beagles, and a golden retriever. And the most aggressive dog that has come in is a siberian husky. I'm not saying anything bad about any of these breeds, i'm just trying to say that any breed can be aggressive if not properly trained and raised, which was the case for these dogs.
TO Riaria: I agree that dogs should be on a leash in public, as much for the dogs sake, as for peoples sake. But ONE pit bull that you knew that was aggressive doesn't PROVE anything. We don't know how this dog was raised, where it came from. Even if it wasn't abused, if it was not socialized, the owner did not take control of her dog, she allowed to dog to be dominant...there is more that goes into an aggressive dog than you would think. And it is not specific to any breed.
watch this. It makes me cry every time i watch it:

If I saw you walking your dogs without a leash, I'd call the police on you. Sorry, I 'm not going to risk my childs life for the sake of a dog with an owner that has something to prove. And it's not only because they're pit bulls, it's because they're animals that can kill and all animals have animal instincts that can not always be predicted.
Let me just add something, I knew a woman who had 2 pits and they were from the same litter and everything. She raised them exactly the same. The one was so vicious she had to end up putting her in a kennel because she even bit her arm and broke it! How do you explain that?

I'm sorry, but not too long ago on the local news here, a pit bull got out of his yard and ran down the block, jumped a 4ft wooden privacy fence, into the back yard where two children 4 and 6, were playing the their sand box, their mother was watching them from the kitchen window washing dishes and watched helplessly as the pit bull tore he 6 year old to pieces, she called the police, her little dog ran out there to protect his family, and was viciously killed, then the dog turned on the 4 year old, mauling her in the face, the mother ran out there with 911 still on the phone screaming and crying as this dog was latched on to her 4 year olds face, she tried to beat it off, and it turned on her. With in minutes a squad car arrived busted in the yard and shot the dog dead who was locked on to the mother upper arm working his way to her neck. The 4 year old and mother was rushed to the hospital and were critical. The 6 year old and the little house dog were dead upon the arrival of the squad car.
NOW tell me, how would you feel if that were your children, inside your own yard, with a 4 foot privacy wooden fence, only to watch this beast jump the fence and tear your children to pieces..... you would be a little prejudice towards that breed. A child is dead on account of this dog, who didn't have an abused past, he dug out of his yard when his owner went to work, and nobody ever had a problem with this dog. This dog was social, friendly, obiedent, and suddenly SNAP, he went crazy and a 6 year old child in his own yard lost his life......
Think about that when your pits break free.....

You are so right!!! I also have a 9year old pit who has never done anything aggressive in his life. He is loved by all who meet him and help give pits a good reputation. He is wonderfully sweet to all people, dogs, cats, birds, and children. I wonder everyday how such a great breed can have the unfair reputation it does. I have worked in a veterinary clinic for some time now and have yet to see a mean pit. People can be so ignorant!
How great to see all these positive comments about pits!

i have 3 pit bulls at the moment. My oldest one died in October at almost 16 years old.
As i type this they are lying on the bed beside me.
Contrary to you I do not walk mine without a leash unless I am in the middle of nowhere, and I am concerned if they ever do get out.Unfortunately they don't play well with other dogs of the same gender or other small animals.
Other than that they are the greatest dogs in the world.
