I'm developing a keen interest in photography and am looking for a good camera to start with. I'm reading a lot of great reviews for the new Canon eos digital rebel xt 8mp. Now that camera runs about $700-800 here in B.C. Is it silly to spend that kind of money or should I just stick to my Nikon Coolpix 2200 which I'm still not taking any great pictures with. I'm not going to be going into photography on any professional level but like I said I just really want to have a great camera. Pearls of wisdom are always appreciated!
Thanks!

I think that if you have a sincere interest in photography the best place to start is to not go out an buy an expensive camera, but to go out and buy a book on photography basics. Though you may have a nice camera, if you do not have a basic understanding of how a camera works, basic composition, camera lingo etc... then you will be in the same place where you started with your Nikon Coolpix, and worse you will feel like you have been cheated out of $800.
Another thing, many of your digital cameras are like personal computers these days. Every couple of months a new model comes out making the previous generation obsolete or at least severely devalued. The fact is though that these older digital slr cameras really arent that obsolete, just simply devalued. The good thing about this so called built in obsolecense is the fact that there are lots of good cameras on the used market. I would check KEH.com, for $800 you can get a more professional digital camera than a rebel xt, which although I think it is a good camera, isn't as rugged and durable as your more professional digital cameras. Anyhow below are some links to some books you should look at, I reccomend the first one, but any of the others listed below are just as good. Like I said, learn first buy later, save yourself some grief.

I can not imagine to take pictures without a camera fitting to the perfect picture moment. i started with the 35mm and was very satisfied with the focus ability for the pictures in mind.

try a canon.
5mp or more should be just fine. Just a point and shoot would do.
olympus also makes great cameras. the might be more inexpensive too?
good luck
