How long do you think it will be before everyone just ditches the land line and has a cell instead. We know that businesses will keep land lines but you don't even have to have a land line anymore to have a computer because you can use cable. I've noticed that payphones are harder to find too. What do you think?

Oh yes you are so correct.
I did some research on this.
I don't remember all of the facts that I learned but this I recall.

For people under the age of 30 in the US. Over 50 percent of them have cell phones, and have never had a land line and are not expected to ever get one.

There were several really astounding facts about global use of cellular. Like some countries that never got land lines installed in the outer regions. Are never going to ever have them. They will just jump over that step and go cellular. So there are people who have phones now that could never have one without cellular.
They have never heard a dial tone...Imagine!!

Thought you might enjoy those thoughts.

I have a cable phone at this time it's cheap 31.00 per month and I can call anywhere within the Continental United States and talk as long as I want. I only use cell phone on trips. I do see the old land line going out in less than 10 years, but I think that cable phones long with cell phones will be around for a very long time but I also think that cell phones will become 100% voice activated and the size of a nickle and fit in your ear within a few years.

Not everyone wants a cell phone, some people dont want to be reached at all times. With a cell phone you dont have 911 service, the reason being is your address may be recorded but the phone is mobile and will not always be in that location. Land lines will be around long after we are gone.

I dont think that land lines will ever just completely be cut out of the house because a lot of familys dont think that cell phones are a good idea because it gives kids a way of communicating with certain people the parents dont want them to. And cell phones aren't always reliable. Especially where i live.. you can never be sure if someone can reach you or not. But i do think that land lines will develop a major decline in popularity and availabilty. as they have already started.

a land line? what is that?

I only have a cell phone. I work during the day monday through friday, so whenever I get off of work and am actually at home, most of the time it's a time where I can use the unlimited night and weekend minutes, so in my case, there isn't a need for a land line.

As long as cell phone companies charge by the minute, there will be land lines. When they come to the point of just charging a flat rate on cell phones, no one will have a land line. I remember when the internet charged by the minute back in 28K modem days...or you bought like 30 hours a month or so. Now, it takes so little effort for internet companies to provide service, they no longer have to do that. Phones will become like that too...its going to take a few more years though.

I think it wll be a very long time. For one, older generations do not like cell phones due to the small numbers and the ability to lose them also comes into play. Having a landline is something that will remain for many many years to come.

land phones are still more reliable. If I want good quality with no problems I prefer the land line.
