Taoism is a Japanese religion, or way of thinking. (whether we call it "religion" or not is debatable). It has to do with the worship of ancestors. (Some would say "respect or reverence" instead of worship). This so ingrained Japanese culture, that it makes it very difficult for a Japanese to go against the philosophy of his parents or ancestors. Family, of course, is very important in that culture.
EDIT:
I believe it is possible to follow Taosim, and another religion, like Buddhism, at the same time. I fdon't know if there is contradiction or not, or whether only certain elements of the two religions are followed in that case.

In Taoism nature is God, but it isn't thought of as a God. It's the way, the natural order of things. It stresses be like water, go with the flow, don't resist the natural coarse. It started in China about 500BCE by a man named LaoTzu.

Taosim is a direct translation of the imperial court of the chinese onto a spiritual realm, where everything is ruled by a Jade Emperor with assistance from generals and seers.
In this belief, Buddha has various forms. One of which is known as the goddess of mercy. It is also in this belief that the chinese believe even animals can have a deity form.
