first, we dont have immortal souls. when we die we go back to the ground, into God's memory and after Armageddon, He will resurrect many to eternal life on EARTH. Consider the following Scriptures please,
EZEKIAL 18:4 Look! All the souls—to me they belong. As the soul of the father so likewise the soul of the son—to me they belong. The soul that is sinning—it itself will die.
PSALMS 104:29 If you conceal your face, they get disturbed.
If you take away their spirit, they expire, And back to their dust they go
ACTS 24:15 and I have hope toward God, which hope these [men] themselves also entertain, that there is going to be a resurrection of both the righteous and the unrighteous.
PSALMS 37:10, 11 And just a little while longer, and the wicked one will be no more; And you will certainly give attention to his place, and he will not be.But the meek ones themselves will possess the earth,And they will indeed find their exquisite delight in the abundance of peace.
so you will see your dead loved ones again, very soon, on the earth in paradise condions ( ie. nomore sickness death, crime, violence or anything of the sort ). it is comforting to know that they are not suffering in hell or pergatory and god did not take them away because he needed another angel in heaven. all of these teachings are false and not based on scripture. i have a small brochure entitled"when someone you love dies" which gives more great scriptual comfort and its free. BONUS!

What comes after death is judgment. There are many arguments as to what happens directly when you die. From a Christian perspective, some believe that those who die with faith in Jesus will go directly to be with him in Heaven, others believe that you are in a deep sleep like (death) state and no nothing until the day of judgment. Which ever is true, the final destination is one of only two choices. If you are in Christ (born again, having accepted Jesus as Savior, how ever you prefer to word it) at death you will be with him in Heaven for eternity, if you are not, regardless of how good you think you were, you will spend eternity in hell. There is no in between and you are either with Christ or all else is against Christ. ALL have eternal life after earthly death, it is just a matter of where YOU choose to spend it. If your friends are saved by Jesus and you are as well, you will be with them. If both of you are not, then you will be together, but I think it will no longer be your dream. Life on earth is temporary, you sound to caught up in material things, maybe you should start thinking about your eternal destiny instead of your earthly life. It's your choice, that is just my opinion.

After death comes nothing. The same thing that "was" before I was born. I don't LIKE it and I wish it weren't so, but it's what is. I can empathize that you don't want to see the world that way and will miss your friends.
I cannot decide what is true in life based on that which would make me happy, tho. If I did that then "reality" for me would be...whatever made me happy and instead of the moderately boring existance I have, I would wake up every morning and order Paris Hilton to lick the floor of my bathroom until it gleamed! Just because...damn! That reality would be fun!

In Islam here is the belief.
Your soul will lie in the grave.
There will come the promised Day of Judgement when all the souls will rise from their graves. That day, every single soul will be judged on thier actions here on Earth.
If you were a good soul, or if God forgives you, then you will be able to enter Paradise.
If you were mostly bad, then you will enter Hell.
For some people, Hell isn't permanent. If you believed in only One God during your life, then you still have a chance of getting into heaven, after your term in hell is over.

There is nothing after death. Occasionally people turn into ghosts but it doesn't last very long.
How do I know there's nothing after death? Because I nearly died in 2004 in a car accident. I was hit by a car crossing the street. It resulted in bleeding in my brain in two places, a skull fracture (have to say, even now... OWWWWWW), a spleen injury, and the tibia/fibia of my left leg broken straight through (I have a titanium pin in my leg now to keep the bone together).
I didn't see any evidence of any god. I didn't see anything of any afterlife. But I nearly died. I credit my survival to fantastic doctors.
Death no longer scares me. I looked him in the whites of his eyes and came out alive. Death is just another step of life. Everything thats born must die. Its the cycle of life.
And its not frightening.
Stop living your life in fear. Thats no life at all. Cherish and love each and every moment because this is the only life you have. If you don't live it well, you don't get to redo it.

No man has lived to tell the tale of death except Jesus. I seriously doubt that he told anyone what it was like to die. Those that saw it and those that read about it today can see that it was painful enough for him seeing the circumstances under which he died.
Honestly no man will ever be alive to tell what happens after death. Why? Because they are dead....understand?

The Right to Enter Paradise
Death is inevitable. The thief on the cross knew when his would occur, but we can not predict our own. After his death, the crucified criminal went to live in paradise with Jesus. Some of us will also live eternally in God's presence. But others will experience everlasting torment, forever separated from Him.
If we receive Jesus as our Savior, our penalty for sin is paid. We are adopted into God's family, and Heaven is our eternal home. If we reject Jesus, we remain alienated from the Lord and under condemnation for our sin. We are destined to experience eternal judgment. God won't accept any of man's excuses because there is no acceptable defense for unbelief. (Acts 4:12)
Become part of God's family today. Acknowledge your sinfulness, and express your faith in these words:
"God, I have sinned against You. (Romans 3:23) I've followed my own way and refused to give You the right to rule in my life. (Romans 3:10-12) I recognize I am separated from You and cannot rescue myself. I do believe that Jesus Christ is Your Son. I accept the truth of the Scriptures? that His death on the cross paid my sin-debt in full. (1 Corinthians 15:3-4) And I ask You to forgive me of my sins. (1 John 1:9) By faith, I receive You, Lord Jesus, as my personal Savior from this moment on."
If you just spoke those words to God, then, like the thief on the cross, you have received salvation? a gift of God's grace. The heavenly Father welcomes every person who comes to Him through His Son, regardless of background, age, or current situation. Through Jesus, the right to enter paradise is yours!
In Jesus's story of the rich man and Lazarus in Luke 16:19-31, the rich man, Lazarus and Abraham were all recognized by each other in the intermediate state.
So yes we will see our friends and family in heaven.

It is appointed unto a man (human being) once to die, and then comes judgment. It is unpleasant to think about but but it is true. Search your conscience, if you are guilty of any sin then you are not right before God and you need to get right with him. The way to do that is through Jesus Christ. Start asking God to reveal himself to you. If you are listening; he will.

Only dead people know what comes after death (the process of becoming dead). but since they're dead the living (those who are not dead) cannot ask them because they are dead.
