Getting them put on is not painful. Once they start moving your teeth it will be a little painful. And when you have to go get them tightened it will be painful. It's usually not that unbearable though.

I can tell you that I've had braces twice! They don't hurt so much to put on that day, it's the evening that you start to feel achy and don't want to eat anything but soup. Usually advil or tylenol will take the discomfort away. I found the bands on the back teeth to be the most uncomfortable because the orthodontist puts in 'spacers' - these little rubberbands between your teeth to make space for the metal band. Once his mouth gets adjusted to it, then each month he'll be uncomfortable for a couple of days when they get adjusted. Also, make sure he uses the wax they give him so his lips and cheeks don't get too cut up until the skin inside his mouth toughens up. Nowadays they don't make kids wear them as long as I did (2 years first time and 1 year second time). He'll make it through and be thrilled with the results.

the actual process of putting them on is really not that painful... but in a few hours, they will start to hurt a lot! After this there will be pain for about a week. Don't listen when the orthodontist says that it'll only hurt for 3-4 days, it will hurt for a week. And, in my case, one of my teeth hurt for 3 weeks!! To prevent this, he should take an advil or similar painkiller right when he leaves the office, even if it doesn't hurt yet. I made that mistake and it just ended up hurting a lot later. Also, make sure to stock up on ice cream, pudding, yogurt, and lots and lots of soft foods. For a more substantial meal, soup is a good choice, or the meat from the sloppy joe... no bun

the application of the brackets and wire is not painful..however the pulling that happens once they are tightened up can be uncomfortable. this pulling is what moves your teeth into their new position. also, there is a period of abrasion that happens to the inside of your cheeks and lips from rubbing on the new hardware. use wax to smooth over these areas. to help prevent excessive wearing to delicate tissue.

orajel for braces works well and will help get him through the initial adjustment phase.

take some tylanol on your way to the orthodontist office, so that it can be working when he is finished. you can alternate tylonol and ibuprophen as they are different drugs. (example: tylonol can be taken every four hours so can ibuprophen. so take the tylonol and two hours later take the ibuporphen, then in two hours take the tylonol again...etc)

From personal experience, it doesn't hurt when you're getting the braces on. But afterwards (when you start to eat) it hurts and feels sore. It is different for everyone, but for it, it hurt for about a week, and then everything was fine afterwards. I've had them for 2 years now, and it only hurts occasionally when the orthodontist tightens them or changes wires.

when they put the braces on they are not painful it just feels funny, although the next day they will feel heavy and sore probably for the next week, and it will hurt to eat.the first 3 times that they tighten them will be painful when they put on and take off the rubberbands, then after 3 months they wont hurt anymore, and his teeth may feel like they are falling out but they are not they are just moving.

No; he'll mostly feel some pressure. He might get an occasional pinch, but it's minor. After they're put on, his gums may be a little sore for a day or two, but rinsing with salty water will help them heal more quickly.

Yes, well to some people. If you have a really sensitive mouth, braces will totally hurt!

Part of it depends on your orthodontist. I've heard that braces hurt for the first few days.

ok i have braces and i got them a few months ago. getting them out on does not hurt! all the do is glue brackets on and feed a wire through and thats it. depending on waht all he needs then that will determine whether it hurts but it really doesnt hurt!
