The best thing would be to move out of there of course but it's better for you to survive without them. Your mother-in-law really love cats; doesn't she?
There will be a time when she will need to take a decision about those cats or the city will look after this situation. Someone will complain some day and you know of course what will happen. I believe you should have a serious talk with her about this. You do not say if this is your home or hers. I presume it's hers because if you took the time to ask the question, and it was your home, you would've taken care of this.
Being allergic to cats and living in a place with 16 of them; I'm surprised you had the strenght to write! Your mother-in-law is really unreasonnable!
Now, you do not say if she is your spouse's mother, or perhaps a step-mother?... Nor her age. She lost control I think. I bet she doesn't ever remember all of their names! LOL. Please do not be offended. I feel sorry for people who care this way for animals. Especially cats because I love them too.
You have a lot of courage. Try talking to her and if she chooses to keep all those cats, the best thing for you is say "Goodbye" to the family ( the cats of course)

It depends on how severe your allergy is. I am allergic to cats but it is mild. I bathe my cats, do not have any curtains or carpeting in the house, and keep things very clean with a HEPA vacuum. I also get desentizing shots.
I have a cousin who has asthma attacks that would put her in the hospital coming near a cat. She even gets sick from cat hair and dander on people's clothing.
So if your allergies are mild, you can take some medicines like benadryl or clarinex and survive.
If your allergies are severe--you have a medical excuse not to visit your mother-in-law.

Ah. This is what happened with my father and his mother-in-law. He had to go to the emergency room after having a huge reaction. Anywho, I think the best thing to do about that is to tell her about it. I'm sure she would clear away the cats, and put them in one room that no one can go into. I doubt she would have a reason not to do so. Don't not do it because you feel bad about telling her. This is your health at risk (amounts depend on how strong your allergy is).

You poor thing! I'm allergic (asthma) to cats too and my in law families have cats much to my dismay . A reputable anti histamine and nasal spray may have worked but 16 kitties is unhygenic . You move or they move , your health wont recover.
You could also invest in a pit bull or rhodesian ridgeback , they might find them tasty.

You can get shots. There is a new immunity shot that appeared, I guess a year ago after safe testing. It will take at least 3 or more years. At least 1 to see the effects. This is for long term dedication.
But I suggest going to the allergy doctor for oral or nasal medication if it's temporary.

Just explain to her that you are allergic and stay away or keep plenty of Benadryl or an epi-pen handy.
Best wishes.

You don't specify if you live with them or you visit them.
If you live with them at their home, you have no other choice but to deal with it. I then suggest you get out as soon as you can.
If it's visitation, then stop going. You let them know you have serious allergies and unfortunately, the cats trigger them greatly. Therefore, you can no longer visit. If they want to meet for dinner or come to your home, you welcome the alternatives, otherwise, you must consider your health.

i know that they have allergy shots for cat allergies. i'm not sure if RX allergy pills work for cat allergies or not.
this is a good question. my boyfriend is also allergic to cats and if we ever want to live together, we're going to have to find a solution to the cat issue!
