I also seem to have a very rapid pulse quite frequently at the mo , sometimes to the point where it feels my heart is in my throat.

anxiety will do it. And the more aware you become of your heartbeat the worse it makes it, try to relax, try to occupy your thoughts on other things instead of your body. Dont go looking for illnesses you think you might have, if you have serious concerns then check it out with your gp anyway. Our body's functionings are rarely noticed, they're there on the subconcious level most of the time and glitches here and there are not even noticed but when we become anxious we do notice the beats and leaps and rythmns.

My heart skips a beat sometimes two.Actually it has got worse over the last five years. When it was first diagnosed it was called an ectopic heartbeat which is quite common. The heart consultant at the hospital spotted the deterioration a couple of weeks ago but now I am on beta bockers it is ok. I would advise you check with your doctor if you are concerned.

It could be a premature ventricular contraction - "PVC" for short. It happens when there's a "hiccup" in the heart rhythm and the heart needs to "reset" its electrical impulses. They are common, and in most cases are not serious.

When I had them, they felt like my heart would suddenly go "THUMP" in my chest, sort of like if you're walking along and you miss a step or half-trip, and come down hard on the other foot, and pause for just a second to re-catch your balance.

From MedicineNet.com: "Patients with PVC’s sometimes report palpitations in the chest and in the neck. Palpitations are discomforting feelings due to forceful heartbeats. The heart beat immediately after a premature ventricular contraction is usually stronger (the heart ventricle contracts more forcefully) than normal. Patients with premature ventricular contractions may report feeling that the heart has stopped briefly. This is because there is usually a brief pause in heartbeat after a premature ventricular contraction when the electrical system of the heart resets."

have you spoken to your gp. for reassurance speak to him.
if you have anxiety then this will most likely be the cause.
anxiety/panic can give you palpitations/fluttering sensation/racing heart and many other symptoms including chest pain.
you may notice your breathing speeds up, and/or becomes shallow, you may yawn or sigh or gasp quite a lot. this is all hyperventilation and causes alot of symptoms.
to help yourself you need to slow your breathing and not take big deep breathes. as you need to balance your o2 and co2 levels. also breathe in through your nose not your mouth.
try this
take a (normal) breath in and hold for a count of 10.
breathe out trying to keep in a slow steady manner.
then breathe in to a count of 3
then out for a count of 3
each time you breathe out say the word relax to yourself.
repeat this count in and out 10 times or a minute.
then repeat from beginning.
continur until you feel calmer.

you will need to practise this a lot when you are not anxious to get the hang of it. and do it any time you start to feel even a little anxious.
you may need to go for some anxiety management so see your gp about this.

It could be. But first examine your intake of caffeine...coffee?...extra-strength medications?...caffeinated coke etc?...even chocolate. These things can effect your heartbeat when consumed in great quantities...so can stress effect it. Then go see your doctor...he'll probably have you wear a halter monitor for 24 hours to see when they take place and what you are doing at the time (oh, you also have to keep a diary of when they happen).

See your Dr and tell them. Arhythmia, is an occasional uneven heartbeat.
Other person is right, avoid too much coffee, caffeine ( cola) , overhaul your food/drink intake, but definitely, definitely see your Dr, just in case
