Studies have been done showing that healthy versions of low-carbohydrate diets eliminate acne problems in as little as six weeks, with very consistent results. But most people aren't willing to follow a low carbohydrate diet for long, or if they do follow one they'll be choosing really bad foots in place of the carbs.
You can read the book "Acne Prescription" by Nicholas Perricone for more info. You can get this from Amazon.
And honestly, if you use a good water-based facial moisturizer with anti-inflammatory ingredients and antioxidants (like Ultra Rejuvenex for instance), this will improve your acne problem more than the actual products FOR acne. It will do this because after about ten to fourteen days of consistently using an expensive face cream twice daily, the oil secretion from your pores will drop significantly. Understand that part of the reason that the oil is secreted to begin with is to keep your skin from getting dry. If you use the right moisturizer (like Ultra Rejuvenex (search web for it)), over time it will decrease oil production and help to clear your skin. The first several days, however, a water-based moisturizer like thus may very well make your acne worse. It won't start helping until your over-moisturized face signals the oil glands to slow down production of oil.
Something that Perricone mentions in his book as well is not to scrub your face with a wash cloth. This inflames tissue on your face, and can actually cause acne. Rather, look for an "Apricot scrub" at the store. This you rub in with your fingers for a couple minutes and there are tiny beeds of natural apricot that help to clear poors and remove dead skin without inflaming your pimples or making new ones. Perricone was a professor of Dermatology at Yale, and one of the reasons he wrote his book is because the methods most people use for their acne simply don't work at all for many (Clearisil, Proactiv, astringent), and these approaches are not the best way to address the problem at all. They've just become custom.
The bacteria is not the root cause of the acne, btw. If it were, then every average human being would have an acne problem. And people with acne clearly go through a lot more trouble than everyone else to sterilize their face, and it obviously does not work for a lot of people.
There's evidence that chemicals like benzoyl peroxide and aspirin (used in Proactiv) actually make the problem worse for many simply form the irritation from the chemicals themselves on your skin. My recommendation is thus the following:
1) Follow a healthy form of low-carbohydrate diet if you think you can
2) Stop using these worthless Clearisil, Proactiv, astringents and topical antibiotics.
3) Purchase a mild scrub soap like an apricot scrub you can find at any drugstore or Wal-Mart.
4) Buy Ultra Rejuvenex and use this at morning and at night after washing your face with the mild soap. (remember that the cream will make it worse for up to a week, then your overmoisturized face will signal oil production to drop, and your skin will begin to clear)
5) There are various supplements you can buy along with proof from studies that they may have benefit for acne, and more information is in this book I mentioned.
But if you only did steps 2 through 4, or even #1 all by itself, I think you'd see a big difference in your acne.

Dry and/or greasy skin due to poor oil composition of the skin. Thick greasy oils clog pores, lack of oil leads to dryness and irritation. You need thin oils to moisturize while dissolving and clearing gunk in your poors. Try fish oil or seafood. 2 tsp fish oil a day or 4 servings of seafood a week. Stick it out for at least 2 months; it will take a long time to replace all your oil. Any effect after 1-2 days is temporary or random; so even if it makes you break out a little at first, you haven't given it a full try yet.
In the short term you can wash and moisturize well, but that will only go so far. Plus excessive washing can be drying and excessive moisturizing can be clogging. Use a small amount of a light moisturizer, made with oil not jelly or grease. Often that means soybean oil or mineral oil. Mineral oil means mined from the ground. So soybean oil is usually better, though mineral oil won't cause too much harm. Clean with soap and water, not a harsh acne cleanser. Even then they only work so well. So you really need the seafood.
Antibiotics aren't really good for bacteria long term, they'll come back in force after. Short term they may help. After you get off them find some kefir with acidophilus listed first or 2nd to replace the friendly bacteria they destroyed. Studies show less illness when you have these bacteria, even outside the stomach in places such as the lungs and elsewhere. You want friendly bacteria to fill the void when the antibiotics stop, not harmful ones.
In the short term you might also try 100,000+ iu retinol vitamin A (a megadose, and too much for normal use) or one of the acne drugs that is similar to retinol vitamin A. It's some minor harm to your organs, but it helps against bacteria on your skin. At least it doesn't have the other long term drawbacks to your skin that antibiotics and many scrubs do.
If you would like to learn how to treat your acne permanently and regain your health and wellbeing, without drugs, without typical acne treatments, and without any side effects, then this will be the most important letter you will ever read.

First do not touch your face unless you have washed your hands with soap and really well. Wash your hands often during the day and before touching the face...repeat. Then buy some witch hazel at wal-mart or at pharmacy and a bag of cotton balls and q-tips and antibacteria ointment. Do not wash your face like you normally do. Take a soft thick wash cloth and put it in hot saltwater, lie it on your face a little wet and hot. Pat it and lay down for a few minutes. then take it off and it has to be washed, really cleaned. then take cotton and clean each pimple with one cotton ball and witch hazel and throw it away. Only 1 pimple to 1 ball. then when this dries at night take a q-tip and dab onto each pimple and just like the balls throw it away after each use. Then change your pillowcase every night for the first week, flip it and you can use it two nights, this keeps bacteria from spreading. Carry antibacterial soap or gell with you during the day. The bacteria spreads from your hands to your face and from one pimple to another. Then do the witch hazel thing in the morning and leave off the ointment. Do the saltwater and the rest more often when at home doing nothing. When it starts to get better you can slow down on the ointment and then keep using the witch hazel for life. It is a natural astringent and PH balancer. You should be showing improvement in two weeks. Be diligent and keep with the program. Remember the clean hands on the face....touching doorknobs, dirty restrooms, all the things in school that other people touch...that causes germs to run rampid. Also remember to change the pillowcases everywhere that you lay, even cover the pillows in the Living room of your house if you are going to put your face on it.... Good luck. You may have to see the Dr. if this doesn't work, they will put you on tetracycline for a long time to get rid of the infection. I preffer you see if this works first, then go. Good luck.

I have an acne treatment that has won me the best answer better then fifteen. Often, the person who voted it the best answer was amazed at how well it worked, even those who had severe cases of acne. I'll copy and paste it below.
Use a hot compress on it, and then use cool water to close the pores. Do the process over and over again, about five or six times. Use soap to wash the area, and then treat it with an alcohol soaked cotton ball. It should be gone within five to six hours.
Here are some of the previous comments I got from those who voted it as the best answer,

There's this 3-step cleansing system similar to Proactive, It's called AcneFree. I use it and I saw results within 2 days and it works great!! It's also cheaper than proactive. You can get it at CVS BROOKS, the supermarket, or basically anywhere... good luck!
I've also heard that It's better than proactive

I've been fighting acne for 10 years! The only thing that worked with excellent results was a prescription drug (see a dermatologist) called Roacutaine (not sure on spelling) but some side effects aren't good.
