...In 1797, the state capital of New York was moved from Kingston to Albany, about 50 miles north...
Albany is the fourth oldest continually-inhabited city and the second oldest chartered city in the United States, (the oldest being New Amsterdam, now New York City).

the state capital was actually moved from Kingston NY to Albany...not from New York City. Back in 'those days" when the capital was made...New York City was so Dutch and basically Englishmen "ruled and lived in" the rest of NY state...they probably wanted to keep their own "area" as the capital area...not an area dominated by Dutch.

Technically, Albany isn't the center of New York State (Central NY is around Utica). But it is central enough for easy access from NYC, Central/Western NY and North Country.

I don't know the history of this issue, but I think it's very wise. NYC is something more then a main city of just one state of the United States. NYC is a unrecognized capital city of the earth.
