Can you automate the power down of your computer under Windows 2000 without having to manually showdown and then depressing the power switch. Seems like you were able to do that under Windows 95, 98. Thanks

Not using windows itself you can't. However, there are programs that will do it.

It is not good for your hard disks to continually be stopped and started again. That is a cause of hard drive failure.

It is always a good idea to leave your PC running 24/7, even when its not going to be used for a couple of days.

If it is a pretty old and slow PC and needs to be shut down, then don't shut it down and start it up more than 2 times a week. Also, whenever needing to restart for any reason (freeze-ups, new software installation, etc) make sure to actually restart it and not shut down for a while then start it back up.

Enable ACPI in the BIOS, and in the Operating System. When configured correctly, the motherboard will send a signal to power down your computer, without you having to press the button.
