To find out how many calories are in a specific food product a small amount (about 1 gm) of the food is burned under laboratory conditions and using a formula the amount of heat given off is converted into calories. Food producers than use software that has the results of all these food tests, enter their recipes into the software program and the program calculates the caloric and nutritional content per serving. This was one of my jobs when i was managing a bakery.

1 gram of Protein contain 4 calories
1 gram of Carbohydrate contains 4 calories
1 gram of Fat contains 9 calories.
Figure it out.
