I have always been told that water is important to hydrate and help cleanse your body of toxins. When you add a chemical-Splenda, caffeine, coloring, etc- into your water, your body must work harder to eliminate that chemical. Therefore, you should not count anything but pure water toward your 8 glasses a day quota.

I was also once told that a splash of lemon juice in your water has a detox effect on your body.

I personally love Splenda and could not stick to my diet without it.

Plain water is definitely better for you. If you are looking at it from a weight loss point of view, artificial sweeteners will only make it harder to diet (i.e. diet cokes). The reason for this is that it tricks your body into thinking it got calories that it actually didn't...so you end up getting hungry again with a vengeance, and eat anyway. Might as well go ahead and drink a good ol' regular soft drink instead of noshing later.
