The role of the sponsor is to take care that the confirmed person behaves as a true witness of Christ and faithfully fulfills the obligations inherent in this sacrament.

A sponsor must be
+ Selected by the person being confirmed
+ At least 16 years old
+- Fully initiated meaning have received all three sacraments of initiation, Baptism, Eucharist, and Confirmation
+ One who leads a life of faith

A sponsor must not be
+ The father or mother of the one to be confirmed
+ Bound by any canonical penalty legitimately imposed or declared (in trouble with the Church)

It is desirable to choose a godparent as sponsor.

With love in Christ.

The following are the criteria for a confirmation sponsor in the Archdiocese of Boston. Different diocese may have slightly different criteria. Why don't your check with your priest?

Criteria for Sponsors:

1. A person who is a practicing faith-filled Roman Catholic adult.

2. A person who is able to relate in friendship to a teenager and is a good listener.

3. A person who is willing to participate in the Confirmation process during the year by attending class and other sessions, including Sunday Mass, with his/her candidate.

4. A person who is willing to share his or her own experience of faith.

5. Sponsors must be fully initiated Catholics, that is, they must have received the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and the Eucharist. Preferably, the baptismal sponsor should be the Confirmation sponsor whenever possible.

6. A sponsor must be at least sixteen years old.

7. Parents may not be sponsors for their sons and daughters

Your Sponsor should meet the above criteria especially being an active practicing Catholic who has been baptized, confirmed, and received Eucharist

A confirmation sponsor is a witness to the commitment of the Confirmand is making to Christ. The sponsor presents the candidate to the Bishop and stands with him/her at the anointing of the Holy Spirit. In choosing a sponsor, the candidate for the reception of Confirmation must select a person with the characteristics listed below. These characteristics come from Canon Law of the Catholic Church and Guidelines of the Erie Diocese.

The sponsor may be a man or a woman, but not a parent.
The sponsor must be confirmed, receiving the Eucharist, practicing his/her faith by attendance regularly at Sunday Mass, and leading a life in harmony with the Catholic faith.
The sponsor is to willingly participate by being a person who exemplifies in faith and action a life that the confirmand can follow as a example of a person journeying toward a closer relationship with the Lord, participates in the liturgies and some classes or service projects, discusses his faith with the confirmand and will encourage the young candidate to live a Christian life after Confirmation

The sponsor should be at least fourteen years of age, of the same sex as the candidate, should have already received the Sacrament of Confirmation, and be well instructed in the Catholic Faith.

God Bless You

I don't think so, the priest or your teacher should have already told you who is eligible to be a sponsor, if i remember correctly they need to be an adult(18yrs. and up) and be a practicing catholic.
