Winchester doesn't like to hear it, but the 325 WSM is an 8 mm and shoots a .323" diameter bullet generally in the 150 to 220 grain weight class, compared to the .308 diameter bullet of the 30-06 with a similar weight range. The 270 normally shoots a 130 to 150 grain bullet, and the 223 around 50 to 75 grains. The 325 is a bit hotter than the 8x57 Mauser but not as hot as the 8 mm Remington Magnum.

You can't gauge bullets by actual size. The .30-30 Winchester and the .308 Winchester are both 7.62x51 but the .30-30 is rimmed and known abroad as the 7.62x51R (for rimmed). They will NOT interchange and the .308 is more powerful.

Rule of thumb, when you see the word 'magnum' on a round it is probably more potent than standard rounds. The .325 Winchester Short Magnum is more potent than the .30-06, .270 and the puny .223.

Is the .325WSM unique? Not hardly. It is a member of the 'new' family of short magnums and ultra short magnums that have become so popular today. The original short magnums are the 6.5 Remington Magnum and the .350 Remington Magnum which have been around (and recently resurrected) since about 1962. They are all good rounds. Still, you can't go wrong with the old .30-06 Springfield or the .270 Winchester.

Pretty sure 30-06 is bigger. I know a 270 is bigger and faster than a 223.

The 325 is bigger than 30 caliber e.g. .308. It's approx 33 caliber. The 325WSM is considered a high powered round.
