Not to ask the obvious, but do you have a DVD-rom drive?

If your answer is yes, then, there are a few troubleshooting questions:
- How old is your DVD-rom drive? Some drives made prior to 2003 cannot read new DVDs.
- Can your DVD-rom drive read Double Layer DVDs? most games that come on DVDs are Double Layer.

Self Experience: My Work Laptop (Dell Latitude D610) cannot read many brands of DVD+r's, but has no problems with DVD-r's or retail DVDs.

Could be the drive is bad or the cable has come loose or the power connector is loose. Could also be that the driver is not valid or bad.

I'm guessing that since you can open and close it to put a CD in, the power must be ok.

Check the Device Manager to see what it says about the drive. If it shows it's working properly, then the driver probably isn't the issue. If there's an issue with the driver, try reinstalling the device.

Has anything been added to the inside of the computer lately? If so, doing so could have loosened one of the cables.

I would try the following:
1) Turn off the computer.
2) Opening the case
3) While touching the metal case in one hand, push on the ribbon cable to the drive and the other end of the cable to the motherboard. (You're holding the case to prevent sending static electricity to sensitive parts.)
4) Boot the computer and see if the drive works.

If all of the above fail, then maybe the drive itself is bad.

If you do not have a DVD drive it will not read the Disc. But if you have a DVD drive and it is not reading the disc then you may have a burned out lens. with that I would go and buy you another DVD rom or burner.

If it is not recognizing any disk means your disk drive is probably not enabled or the device is not installed on your machine.

You can check it by doing the follow..
Control Panel >> System >> Hardware >> Device Manager. This will list all the hardware installed on your machine. If you don't find anything CD-ROM or DVD/CD-ROM, right click on it will tell you whether it is enabled or not.

If you don't find it, install the hardware device program.

You probably have a cd drive, not a dvd drive.

the reason they wont read is because your disk drive is dirty. you need to clean it out regularly to make sure it keeps working good.
