I would tell them that no matter what happens on "the other side" -- whether it be something or nothing at all -- I will always do my best to keep their memory alive in this world.

I'll tell them to think back on their happiest moments and to know that I and the rest of the family loves them. I'd say this even if (s)he DID believe in an afterlife.

To live forever in an afterlife is a horrible thought. I would be happy to have a loved one in my family not believe in an afterlife... unfortunately, I'm the only atheist in my family... well... one of my cousins is an agnostic Jew...

Anyway. Yeah, that's my answer.

That it was a great LIFE being with them and I wouldnt play heads or tails with the afterlife thing which might be false. Dont forget that believers like you, are more biased than non believers.

If this isnt a general question , but something that actually happens to you then I am sorry to hear that. There are plenty of things to say.

Last year my father died. I told him he'd live forever in my memory. I also told him he made me to be the person I am today, and that with my actions I will continue the loving way he lived his life. I told him he won't really die, because he will never be forgotten

That's simply how it is.

Of course, somehow I hope there is an afterlife. It's a nice concept, really. Unfortunately 'hoping' doesn't make it true.

None.
We atheists don't rely on cheap platitudes. All they want to know is how long they will live. And conversely, how short the illness will be.
Only christians are so afraid of death that they have to convince themselves of an imaginary candy land after they die.
We just think that's childish and pathetic.

Reflect upon the fullness of the life they've led, the impact they've had upon their friends, the love of their family and the legacy that lives on after in the sons and daughters and grandchildren....

I would have none except the truth. I'll miss them, there will soon be no pain, etc...

I would probably just be there for them without words of comfort, that's not really my strong point.

Let's put it this way, If it was me dying in the bed, I would be pissed if someone was trying to sell me some god or make-believe cosmic Disneyland in the sky as I die.

I can comfort them by reminding them of the wonderful life they have led and the wonderful family that loves them.
