What type of pet bird would be good for a beginner bird owner?

I'm reserching pet birds. I've never owned one before. So , I don't know what type of bird would be a good starter bird. Any suggestions?

it really depends on several things. How much are you expecting to pay, what's too much? Do you want the bird to talk (beware, even species known to talk will not always talk)? Do you have a lot of time? Do you want it to sing? Do you want to just look at it?

Parakeets (budgies) and cockatiels are easy to keep, friendly, lower in cost range, and very popular. Kind of a gateway bird.

If you are looking for something more exotic and have a lot of time, patience, and love, then small conures and caiques make adorable little clowns...but they are loud, notoriously nippy, and will not talk.

Some smaller birds that require a bit more care but offer lots of love are parolttes and love birds, but do a lot of research!

If you just want to look, canaries come in some beautiful varities, but only the males will sing.

Finches are great and come anywhere from 14.99-199.99. They are easy to care for, but are messing, breed way too easily, and chatter constantly. Want a hoot? go up to a zebra finch cage and say ...bee bee bee... like a beep. It gets them going:)

Stay away from Lories, ecelctus, cockatoos, amazons, greys, ring-necks, and macaws. These require a seasoned bird owner with a heck of a lot of money and time...and fingers made of iron.

A parakeet (budgie) is probably the best bird you can get for your first pet bird. They are hearty, fun and don't require as much maintenance or interaction as other breeds do.
Canaries are wonderful little birds, but they are very fragile and need more attention and care.
Whatever you get, just make sure you don't ever expose your little bird to a draft. They are very susceptible to respiratory infections which could kill them. Also make sure you feed only quality seeds, fruits and veggies and have proper toys to keep it entertained. Give it clean fresh water everyday and keep the cage very clean at all times.

if you are looking for a parrot, a conure was my first bird. If you are leaving him alone for 8 hours a say though, make sure you spend the entire rest of the day with your bird. Birds are very needy pets they need social interaction and human contact. This may not be the best time for you to have a bird.

Wow there are so many great beginner birds. I would definitely say a cockatiel! I got one when I was 5 and he lived almost 18 years. Definitely one of the coolest birds.

A Quaker parrot. We have one, he was still being hand fed when we purchased him. He does squawk very often, but he is the sweetest bird ever. In 5 years he has never bitten ANYONE!! They are not parrots, but related to parakeet!! Very nice birds and are not aggressive like some larger birds. The do live 20-25 years so it is a huge commitment if you get one!! Again, they squawk A LOT and are VERY loud for such a little bird. It freaks our beagle out!! But that is my 2 cents on what bird is a good one. Oh, they are suppose to be pretty good at talking...ours is not, but he has done a great job teaching us parrot noises LOL!! I think I have about 20 down at this point!! He is a very proud human owner!!

a parakeet(it's also called a budgie) is good they are really aforrdable the price range for them is usually 10-30$my first birds were parakeets got them 5 years ago and they are still alive.

budgies but they can be a little loud and a little messy(as all pets can) or cockatiels; they are smart, friendly and very sociable. so are the budgies(parakeets). and they both have potential to talk
