I have struggled with anorexia myself. Having spent years starving myself I am now finally allowing myself to eat like a normal person. I am nearly thirty years old and having a regular menstrual cycle for the first time in my life. I have boobs and hips for the first time too. I was never happy when I was that skinny. The pressure to stay thinner than anyone else was all I thought about. My friendships were very superficial because my weight, my body, calories, sugar, working out....it was all I could think about.
I am sure you already know the physical ramifications.... Anorexia is what put Terry Schiavo into a persistent vegetative state and eventually led to her death.
It is a mental illness that needs to be treated as such.

Anorexia is actually a mental disorder brought on by the pressure put on us by society to look thin and not be looked down upon. I was a victim of this some 40 years ago and to this day I view myself as fat. I overcame the starvation/and the eat and purge deal but I still to this day look in the mirror and see a totally imperfect person looking back. It is something you have to get control of yourself. I am still on a constant diet! I am 5'2", 56 years old and weigh 104 lbs. I exercize daily and diet to this day. Hope this was of some help, but it is totally something you have to get a grip on yourself.

I'm sorry, but I don't think you understand. Anorexia is a mental illness. People that visit Pro-Anorexia sites are just victims of denial, they can't accept they have a problem. But the truth of the matter is they had a problem the minute they considered taking such drastic action to lose weight. It is that obsessive, desperate element that makes Anorexia a mental illness, but they don't realise it. HTH : )

Anorexia is not good. I have thought of doing it myself. The problem with anorexia is if you don't eat your body starts feeding on itself. Starting with muscle mass.
When you choose to eat again you will gain mass amounts of weight because of all the stress you have put your body through. Most people with weight problems also have a high stress hormone in their body called cortisone. You just need to change your mentality. If you stop thinking about your weight and just start doing what is right, the weight will come right off.
No scales aloud. When you use weights, you gain weight but loose inches quicker. Just measure yourself once a month. Do not weight yourself.

Anorexia is a psychological problem. It's typical for people who have suffered a very strict upbringing and cannot meet the high pretensions.

You're okay as God made you, you're an absolute unique person, you needn't "improve" yourself this way! There are better ways, for ex. using your intellect and abilities

okay, anorexia kills. it's a horrible horrible disorder and it has to be treated with medication and therapy.
i have been around a lot of people with anorexia and i'm a recovering bulimic so i know a lot about this topic.
it's not cool, it ruins lives and my eating disorder just about ruined mine. i still struggle with it every day although i am proud to say that i am healthy and eating right and working out a ton. i do not work out to lose weight. i work out as a form of therapy. it keeps me sane:)
it's not cool to starve yourself or make yourself throw up. i have horrible dental problems because of my eating disorder. thousands of dollars worth. not fun, not cool.

Well it is a disease and iut can casue multiple organ and system failure which can lead to death. It is very dangerous to starve your body or binge and perge and unfortunatly most women in particular will die to be thin! As you can tell I am against it and feel that there is not enough awareness out ther for young women who may be suffer from this disease.

self perception disorder combined with a complete lack of knowledge regarding nutrition and how the human endocrine system works..

Comment:

if anorexia is a disease why is there such a lack of it in developing and 3rd world countries?

I think anorexics need help. I don't see how they can think that showing off their bones is pretty. Also I don't think being skinny necesary means beautiful or fat means ugly. Marilyn Monroe was a size 14 and she was glamorous.
