Because serving in the military requires discipline, and if you can't get through high school, you probably won't get through boot camp, or whatever you Americans call it.

I was in the service and did not have a high school diploma but had GED, but I also had some college credits that made it like I had a HS diploma. But the reasoning is this, if you have a diploma you are there for literate enough to be a soldier. But giving the state of our education system that is not alway true. There is also a lot of reading to do from manuals to regs. They are rather bullheaded sometime but there are waivers of all kinds just prob the recruiter.

Service members require high intelligence and aptitude for learning and mastering new skills with rapid and intense training. A failure to complete high school or obtain a GED indicates either a lack of intelligence and aptitude, or a lack of initiative and perseverance. The insinuation that our service members merely perform thoughtless jobs shows only ignorance on your part. I don't think it is crazy for the military to only allow access to individuals that have completed basic schooling because all service members have to be capable of quick and independent decisions that have life and death repercussions. You are right about the hands on work, but you have no idea what tasks military service members are proficient with- that is evident in your question.

You can go into the military if you score pretty high on their tests. But you obviously have a distorted view of the military. As some of the others stated, most military jobs require some special training and if you aren't educated enough, you will never be able to advance in the military.

Yes some things are handwork, but there are a lot of things that need basic skills you get from high school. Like math skills, communication skills, etc. Plus some promotions require you to obtain post-high education.

Also at one time it was you only needed an 8th grade education, but now they want high school diploma or equivalent (GED).

actually, it is HIGHLY specialized hands on work.. LOTS of electronics and high tech equipment. Gone are the days where even the grunts only needed to know hpw to point and shoot. today's military has high tech weapons and as such, needs a highly educated and trained force to operate the equipment. Anybody whop can't be bothered to finish high school most likely doesn't have the self discipline required to do well in the military.

I believe the military will assist you with getting a diploma .
I believe they require it simply because most of the jobs in the military will train you for the outside world when your time with them is done ,and they need to know that you know the basics.

Things that you learn in high school are prerequsite in learning what the army teaches you in becoming a soldier. For example, in the land navigation course, you are to find a place on the map, and laters you are to mark on a map where your present location is. You need to know waht terms like degree, minute, click, etc. is about, and for this you need some basic math taught in the high schools.

The military requires a basic education for all people that join. Contrary to what Kerry says, studies show military personnel are more educated than most Americans.

They did'nt start that until 89 I believe, they used to help you get a g.e.d.,I heard they were hard up to get thier quota's meet for enlistment, so they are talking about loosening some of the requirements just not sure if they will or not. Best to just talk to a recruiter.
