Forget crunches and sit ups right now.

This is absolutely the BEST exercise to do when you are just starting out. It is extremely easy to do it correctly.

You need to do planking.

It prevents your abs from doing what they want and it realllly is a great exercise from personal experience. You need to step it up after you can do it for 2+ minutes easily, but until then it is amazing.

Pilates! It's the most incredible ab exercise I've ever done! It's a form of exercise that works all your "core" muscles (the muscles in your torso, primarily), and wow, is it effective. I saw results in just a week or two and it was absolutely WONDERFUL for my chronic lower back problems as well.

If there aren't any classes in your area, check your local public library for videos or books you can use to get started (though a class is best -- at least take one if you can -- to make sure you have the form right). Netflix also carries a lot of exercise videos (http://netflix.com), by the way, which can be fun if you like to try different ones all the time for variation. Go Pilates! I'm sure you will love it!

Reverse crunches have given me good results for the muscles themselves but you have lose fat to expose them(or lypo) and that's done by creating a calorie deficit.
