Don't just use any old site someone lists!

There are MANY web sites that claim to give you the meanings of name. Unfortunately, many of them are unreliable, because they mix information from a variety of sources, some good, some not. Beware especially of the "baby names" sites (as well as paperbacks of the same sort).

Mind you, MANY of the listings for common names are not bad (and are roughly the same in ANY source you find), but it's almost impossible to know when you hit a BAD one, unless you happen to be familiar with the language the name originated from, whether Hebrew, Latin, Greek, Old English, etc., etc.

Amidst all this, I have found just a handful of sites that take this work seriously. They are quite careful and FAR more reliable than the common ones.

The following may be most generally useful, including both first and last names:

(I've used the first more by far, but I like what I've seen on the other as well.)

These sources typically provide not just a simple definintion but details about the history of a name and names related to it.

There is this site calle www.birthdayalarm.com that has a special section devoted to give the meaning and popularity names have in the US. Good luck!
