I have been sick since tuesday. monday i started feeling really tired and woke up tuesday with a painful sore throat. I had a fever the chills headache body ache..no sneezing or coughing. Well finally got into the doctor today and they did a throat culture. negative on strep..but they were gonna check back in 24hrs for mono..my friends says i can't have mono cause i am not throwing up..is this true?? I mean I really hope that I don't have mono i hope its just like tonsilittis (spelled wrong). Also on the swab they took there was some blood. I am a smoker but have never ever spit up blood or coughed up blood or anything like that. Anyone ever heard of this..should I be concerned??

The best way to reduce the discomfort of sore throat is to take pain meds like Tylenol or Advil (acetominofen or Ibuprofen).

Warm beverages and soups are also soothing to the throat.

Gargling with warm salt water is effective at soothing and also for helping to reduce the viral infection. Good oral hygiene when you are sick is also good -- brushing your teeth and using antiseptic mouthwash (like Listerine brand) are helpful to reduce the level of viruses in your mouth.

There are also tons of products such as throat lozenges and throat sprays that are soothing. For lozenges, I have found that the most effective active ingredient is:
hexylresorcinol
But there are not very many products that have it. Instead you will probably be able to find products containing other active ingredients.

The brand Cepacol is generally the most effective lozenges available (in the USA). Here is their website:

Don't be concerned. It is a chance that you could have tonsilitis, but the doctor should have seen that when he looked in your throat. And of course it could be mono. We'll see in the long run, just eat healthy.......soup, and take some vitamin C, like orange juice or Sunny Delight. You'll be ok. IM me or email me if you don't mind, and tell me what the doctor found out. Don't be scared, it'll be ok. Best of luck to you.

I'm sick too, since the 30th. Coughing up all kinds of stuff. I'm not throwing up though and it ended up being bronchitis so don't worry too much about mono.

You could have a throat infection or tonsillitis and a really bad flu
did they give you anti-biotics? If so, they will work within 48 to 72 hours depending on the brand and the strenght he prescribed.

You may be in early stages of mono. My son did not throw up with mono. Was anything said about bronchitis?
