I want to learn both Hindi and Farsi, so if either one is your expertise I would greatly appreciate any help.

Urdu and Hindi are essentially the same language at the level of everyday speech, but they use different writing systems, and in writing Hindi uses more Sanskrit-derived forms, where Urdu uses Farsi/Arabic origin words. Urdu is the main language of Pakistan, Hindi of India. Neither is used in Africa though Hindi-language films are popular!

Farsi is relatively easy to learn, very simple grammar, and pronunciation is easy for English speakers. Hindi/Urdu pronunciation is a bit of a challenge, at least for me!

I would advise to learn one first, and then move on to the other. Personally, I would go for Farsi first, but it depends on your interests.

There is really no substitute for finding a patient and friendly native-speaker to help you out. There are plenty of Iranians and South Asians in most cities of UK and I would guess in th States, newcomers may be happy to do a language exchange - you help them with their English, and vice versa. Also, there are often night schools, and community classes.

If you get on with books, try Leila Moshiri's Colloquial Persian, available with cassettes, from Amazon.

Good luck.

I would advise you to learn Urdu instead of Hindi. Urdu is similar enough to Hindi in spoken terms for you to be able to communicate with people, but if you learn Urdu, it will be easier for you to learn Farsi too, becuase Urdu has Farsi and Arabic origins, and the writing is exactly the same as Farsi.

I studied Hindi for three months in the Mussoorie " Landoor Language School", is a very cheap and good school in a beautiful village in India, 7 hours by bus from New Delhi. They also make short courses, even two weeks, for those who have not so long time to spend abroad.

Parsi are warriors and they come from Persia which is Iran.
Hindi is an international language spoken in all of India (where there is 400 dialects) Some Parsi people live in the North West of India and in New Dehli, the Capital. Hurdu is a Pakistani language spoken by Mahomet's or Muslims, also spoken in Black Africa.
So, please make sure of what language you want to speak and
think well before you choose. Cheers.
Salut (I am French).
