What about teachers, preachers and so on,....shouldn't everyone get a tip for doing good service rather than a select few? What about the social workers and child care providers? I recently went to the dentist and thought well hey, this lady spent a lot of time on my teeth, so why doesn't she have a tip jar or wait around for me to give her one. She did her best job, just as a hairdresser would. It just made me think about things. Wow, I think I deserve a tip too -and not just a verbal remark lol. This is not meant to offend everyone. I am just curious about your thoughts on this.

I don't think anyone should get tipped! I think people should get paid a fair wage for a job well done. When I go to the salon, restaurant, etc., I'm expecting a good haircut, good service with my meal, etc. That should be included in the price of the service! If I love the service - great, I'll bring my business back! If I don't love the service, I'll find somewhere else!

It depends on the region of the world you are in, but usually tipping is for people who work in the "service sector" and not those you have pursued educational or philisophical degrees or certifications. Mainly those who work for minimum wage or lower.

However, anyone who goes above and beyond in a "service" field like child care providers might be deserving of a tip. Please keep in mind though that in some instances tipping is offensive or illegal. Dental hygenists are trained medical workers and most employers of such do not allow for tipping. Send her a nice thank you card or maybe some flowers as opposed to actual money. I'm sure she will appreciate it.

This is just my opinion but I have always tipped waiters because they make minimum wage. Actually when I was a watress, there was a separate minimum wage for us that was lower than the normal minimum because they just presumed we would get tips.Thank goodness they've done away with that. As far as tipping a dental hygienist, forget it! Most of them in Canada make $20.00 an hour while the average water or waittres makes $7 an hour.

NO. Service personnel depend upon tips to make up for the balance of their hourly salary which should be minimum wage. In other words a waiter will be paid only a bit over 3.00 per hour because his employer will include the balance as part of his salary and tax him accordingly whether or not he actually earned that. Teachers, preachers, etc... have a set salary. If they received the minimum wage they wouldn't need to depend on customers for the balance.

Consider that a tip is a reward for excellent service. When a McDonalds employee asks you if you want katsup and hands you a bag across the counter...usually not something you want to tip them for. Too many business' these days expect a tip simply for the service that they have already charged you for, and people should stop rewarding this free hand-out behavior.

So Far as your dentist is concerned...consider the fact that this is the same person who's making a million+ a year and raping your insurance benefits...

Yeah but the only difference I see is, the other people are mostly serving us food... And the other people like dental hygenists earn a LOT more and they don't need the money as much. But the other things.. I'm not entirely sure why we we're not supposed to tip some people. I'm sure it would really make their day. But then of course, we'd all be broke by that time. :P

The tipping system is a stupid sham designed to compensate people who don't make nearly enough money.

Dentists make plenty good money. You don't tip them. Preachers have a collection plate--close enough to a tip.

I've been a server, and I was always kind and polite and efficient and all that...and I never got compensated enough to make serving worth my time. Maybe some people do, I don't know.

But remember that servers make around $2.15 an hour in the States. Tip the poor bastards! We NEED it.

In Europe, gratuity is included. Always. Yet another way Europe is better than the US. I hated working for tips--I felt like a food-bearing ho.

you miss the point of tipping. those who have a profession that get tips, don't get as much pay/salary as other professions.

example....waitress...she makes about $3.31 per hour plus tips. But remember minimum wage is at least $7 per hour now. But they don't get as much cause they get tips.

To give a tip to a dental hygienist would be giving a tip to a person that is already making at least $18 per hour.

BIG difference.

I never tip these people. Its there job to do what they do. They are the ones that created the tip jar's which should have never been in the first place. a waste of time and money.

the reason why we tip a lot of the jobs you mentioned is because those jobs get paid hardly anything, and the main income for the people doing those jobs is their tips. however a social worker, for example gets paid well, and doesnt need the tips for their service.
