This is funny.....ALL these people, and all the different answers.
Some are correct stating that the SR-71 "Blackbird" being the fastest aircraft, however it IS NOT a "fighter", it is a re-con/surveilance aircraft.
I don't think the Space Shuttle qualifies as a "fighter jet" either....LMAO
The Concorde.....Now that IS funny.....Not even close....
The MiG-25 was developed as an all-weather high-altitude supersonic interceptor. To counter the threat of American Mach-3 jets like the XB-70 Valkyrie bomber and SR-71 Blackbird reconnaissance aircraft, the Soviet Air Force needed nothing less than the fastest, highest-flying interceptor ever built. The first MiG-25 prototype flew in 1964, and the "Foxbat" is still the fastest fighter aircraft in the world, holding several speed, altitude and time-to-climb records. Since the MiG-25 was designed primarily to fly to an altitude of 80,000 ft at almost three times the speed of sound, it is not as maneuverable as some of the smaller fighters like the MiG-29, which was built for aerial dog fights, but the legendary MiG-25 "Foxbat" is the only aircraft in the world that can take you to the edge of space, allowing you to view the curvature of the Earth below and the blackness of space above.
Officially, the world's fastest jet-powered aircraft remains the SR-71 Blackbird. Although the official record is about Mach 3.3 (or 3.3 times the speed of sound), many believe the aircraft could actually fly much faster. However, it seems unlikely that the SR-71 could go much faster than about Mach 3.5, with a very slim chance of Mach 4, due to propulsion and structural limitations. By Mach 3.6 or 3.8, shock waves generated by the nose of the aircraft are formed at an angle such that they impact the engine nacelles and cause the engines to unstart. In addition, heat generated by the aircraft's high speed increases to the point that certain portions of the plane's structure begin to fail by about Mach 3.5.
Nonetheless, some believe the SR-71's speed record has already been bested by its supposed replacement dubbed the Aurora. If this mysterious new spy plane does indeed exist, it is believed to cruise at speeds ranging from Mach 5 to Mach 8 at 100,000 ft (30,510 m). These Mach numbers correspond to speeds of 3,380 mph (5,435 km/h) to 5,400 mph (8,685 km/h). The Aurora may use scramjets, pulse-detonation wave engines, or some other exotic form of propulsion to reach these speeds. However, we should stress that there is no conclusive evidence that this plane ever existed.

I'd say the F-15 Eagle, Mach 2.5, based on a technicality. The question was the fastest FIGHTER! The YF-12 and the MiG-25 Foxbat are faster, but they were designed as Interceptors. And again, based on another technicality ("ever build") it would be the YF-23 Black Widow(Mach 2.58), but it will never be produced. Finally the Mikoyan Project 1.44 "Flatpack" has an ESTIMATED top speed of Mach 2.6, slightly surpassing even the Black Widow.

The YF12A, it was a fighter version of the SR71. Only 3 were built and it never was deployed.

The SR-71 "Blackbird" holds the official Air Speed Record for a jet aircraft with a speed of 3,529.56 km/h (2,188 mph). It was a manned aircraft powered by air-breathing engines, and was capable of taking off and landing unassisted on conventional runways. The record was set on 28 July 1976 by Eldon W. Joersz near Beale Air Force Base, California, USA.[1]

However for many people the term 'air speed record' implies simply the fastest aircraft. Other aircraft have flown faster without breaking the official air speed record. This is because they do not comply with FAI rules. For example, experimental high-speed aircraft are often unable to take off under their own power, and require a carrier aircraft.

The Space Shuttle is the fastest aircraft, but it is unable to take off solely under its own power, requiring two solid rocket boosters during its ascent to orbit. During its ascent through the atmosphere the Shuttle's airspeed is under Mach 2. However, during re-entry it glides into the atmosphere at 17,500 miles per hour because of its residual orbital velocity. It is therefore not a conventional aircraft, as most people would consider the term.

The Boeing X-43A is the fastest air-breathing aircraft, having set a speed record of 11,200 km/h (7,000 mph), or Mach 9.68, on November 16, 2004. However, it is unmanned, and relies on a carrier aircraft to reach altitude, and a discardable booster rocket to reach the operating speed of its scramjet engine. It is also incapable of landing.

The rocket-powered X-15 was the fastest powered, manned aircraft, reaching a top speed of 7,274 km/h (4,510 mph) on October 3, 1967. However, it was a rocket-powered test aircraft incapable of taking off from the ground and was launched at altitude from a carrier aircraft and operated at the margins of the atmosphere.

the fastest aircraft ever is a plane called concorde wich were worth $80 million and 4 were only built wich three crashed the last flight of the concorde wais in july 16 2003. the concorde is now in england for exibition.
