I'd say that anyone who can afford a 3 MP camera ought to just go ahead and get a 4-5 MP camera. There's not much difference in price, but there is a bit of difference in image quality.

I think the best deal of the season is the Canon Powershot A530. It has been on sale at numberous big box stores below $130. That's a good price on a good camera. The A530 was selling for $180 not too long ago. I've recommended this camera within my own family, so I'll be living with the results of this recommendation right along with you. You can use the rest of your budget to buy a decent memory card.

The Canon Powershot A540 is the big brother to this excellent camera and it has reviewed quite well, also. I have seen it selling for $170 this season in all the usual places.

Many stores have the A540 for $170. Add a decent memory card and you're still under budget.

Get a used camera. Go with the 5.0mp since the 3.0 has noticible pixels on even smaller prints. They're are lots of used cameras that are still in the box (never sold), that stores might have at a big discount. I have seen a whole row of them at Walmart.
