I have always felt that before a performance, the only way I can really shake off the severe nerves (I'll always have some performance anxiety) is to be OVER-PREPARED. I would practice so much that I could play it, literally, in my sleep. I would wake up in the middle of the night practicing scale patterns. You have to practice so much that you feel like it will be fantastic even on your worst day. It sounds like a lot, because it is. The only way to get better is to practice.

Practice practice and more practice, however this will only make you good technically. Confidence in performance only comes with practice too, so the only way to get better at it is to do it. Harsh truth I'm afraid but it is the truth.

Try doing it to small groups at first; your friends or family maybe - they'll be sympathetic to you if it goes wrong and give you honest praise if it goes well.

Remember also that you will always notice loads more mistakes than anyone else (you know how some days you just can't get your hair right, and then you realise that actually no one notices? Same thing!) But one of the hardest things to realise/accept is that there is no such thing as a perfect performance; we all make mistakes, but it is how one copes with those mistakes that is the measure of a good performance. Provided you nail the technical bits (ie. practice loads) you shouldn't make any major mistakes - and then the only other thing to do is to relax and enjoy it.

Whoa, that all got a bit deeper than I intended!

Practice with friends, family or other musical professionals. Practice in front of a mirror. Practice with the curtains open. You will get used to it & the more you practice, the better you'll be.

Stage fright is real common. By continuing to work on it & getting constructive feedback from people, you will get over it. Don't expect perfection early in your career. And don't honor everyones opinion about music. I wouldn't know a good technical performance if it bit me. It's an art form - it takes time to perfect. You are your own worst critic - zone out the audience and focus on the music and the technical aspects of the performance.

Good Luck!

Just think, that they are there to watch you, they gave up there time to watch you, you are the one on stage to make the audience feel something that you are expressing with your instrument, they are there because of you. You think that whatever comes out of the instrument they will like. And anyway they wouldn't laugh, because not all people are douchebags.

Just be confident in your ability and command of your instrument. Close your eyes and feel the music ...remember to enjoy and others will feel the vibe...
