my keets fly around the house and return to their cage when ready(sometimes up to 5 hours!!!) but .....
#1. don't leave them unsupervised, being so little and fragile, they fit almost anywhere and are easily hurt.
#2. make sure nobody is coming or going to or from your house, they fly away really fast.
#3. cover all containers with water, close the toilet lid, fishtanks etc.. they drown quite easily.
#4 . be ready to repaint because mine peeled the paint of the wall right above my curtain rods.
#5. if their wings are clipped and they cant fly, follow them while they are out, they are good hiders(i found out the hard way!!!)
and last but not least>>> be ready to clean, they poop a lot!!!!!and do give them time to get used to their new home, it will be easier for them.

I used to have birds and i would let the cage door open so they were free do go wherever in the room. I feel bad when the birds have to stay in cages their whole lives. Just make sure that its safe for them! I came home one day to find one of my parakeets dead in back of a dresser he got stuck behind, and let's not mention what happend to the other bird when we introduced a cat into the house.

I had a cute little parakeet once and we would have something called "fly time." My bird was allowed out once a day to fly around a room with no open doors or windows. I would stay in there with her and when she was done exercising she would land on me and I would take her back to her cage. I believe we started to do this a few weeks after we got her. I hand fed her every so often so she got used to my hands before I let her fly around. That way I was able to put her back in the cage. You should wait till you let them out so they know you and they know their surroundings.

My friendly advice to you is to never allow your birds to roam anywhere in your home unsupervised. There are many things that could damage or kill your birds, not to mention all the bird poop you're going to have everywhere that you will have to clean up.
A human's home is not a natural environment for a bird. For example, if left alone, they may chew on an electrical wire; or eat something that may clog their system; they may somehow fly or fall into open water sources, such as a toilet or sink; or they could fly into a window or ceiling fan, break their necks & die, just to mention a few safety hazards.
You do what you think is right... However, my advice is, NO to allowing the birds to roam a room alone.

First make sure the room that they are in is clean so they can't eat anything unfamilar to them or eat a toy piece or something so they choke.
Make sure they know that the cage is where they are Let them out yes watch them let them have an equal amount of time out as in they might get sad if they are in the cage too long they need to know that they are still allowd to play around on the ground

I have an aunt who has two small birds and they leave the cage door open so the birds can get out. The birds don't even leave the cage they just sit on top or in it but mostly on top of the cage they also have two parrots that stay out of their cages. If you feel comforable in letting them out then you can but if you feel better to leave them locked in the cage until they've been there longer then do that but I say its up to you.

leave them in the cage for like a week so they get used to the area then take them out for about 10-20 min for like.. 2 days then when theyre comfortable with everything you can let them go anywhere they want.. but make sure u trim their wings, and tail feather just a little so they dont fly up too high, it could be dangerous.. also make sure there isnt anything like a open window or a vent or anything like that they could escape from

No Way the cat might eat it and it could get stuck or tangled in somthing .If you really want to let them out in an empty room.to catch them if they run away from you while your trying to put them back in their cage cover them one at a time whith a thin cloth and pick them up carefully.I have two parrakeets too! Had one for about 3 years the other 1.

Just consider open or closed windows..... if their open they'll fly and if the window is closed it could cause a few broken bones or death if they fly into the closed window.
An aviary would be better for yous both, they get fresh air and sunlight and you get a clean bill of health.
BTW they love to chew and damage furniture and figurines and shoes. don't let them out unless they been in the that room for a few days or weeks. They wont feel so threatened & uncertine with their surroundings when you let them out.
Their great fun to watch!
