My son refused to poop in the potty and it was hell on us for 2 years. he learned to pee when he was 2, but refused to goto the bathroom for the other. We were in the middle of a move when he was 4 and him and I were at out old house just grabbing some stuff real quick. He said he had to poop and I took him in and sat him on the toilet and told him he HAD to sit there till he was done since we didn't have nay underwear at the old house. He did it and never had a problem after that. So try just sitting him there and telling him he can't go anywhere till he does it.

He may be afraid of the toliet "getting" his poop. I know it sounds weird, but I've heard of some kids being afraid of that. It is some how tied in with the discomfort of actually going poop. I'd just keep trying. He'll get it. When you see signs that he needs to go, walk in there and stay with him while he goes. Getting some kids "potty" books might help. Only let him read those while he is on the toilet. They have some great ones that make flushing noises.

This is going to seem kind of weird but this worked for one of my friends. She did the open door thing, so her son would see that its ok to go potty in there, it was kind of weird, but it worked for her.
