Hi, as a Jew myself, I have been to many Bar Mitzvahs. Usually, gifts are given in the form of money. As for how much, you should give in increments of 18. This is the symbol of chai, which means "life." So, give $18, $36, $54, $72, $90, $108, and so on.

i've been to many bar mitzvahs and bat mitzvahs. a typical rule of thumb is give them $40 and then add $10 for each year you have known them. As a friend, you shouldn't be giving more than $80 though- even though you may have known the person your whole life. $100+ typically comes from the relatives.

I would get a brand new $10-$20 dollar bill and put it in a Bar Mitzvah card. Money is usually the gift of choice. Do go to the bank soon for the bill as they might have to order a brand new one in. Banks do not always have them.

If you know the kid pretty well, maybe a cool video game or DVD box set.
Watch some MTV, see what those little brats are playing with. Like, My Super Sweet 16 (ugh.)
Or get the kid a musical instrument--like, say, go in on a drum set with some other people (like, each person buys a drum/percussion instrument.) The kid will LOVE you.
The parents will HATE you. But what's important here?
