I think the best way to meet people at dances is to smile and seem open to someone approaching you. If you connect eyes with someone you think you might be iterested in, hold his gaze for at least 3 seconds smile then look away. Make sure that you're not always amongst a crowd of other girls. Boys and men find it hard to aproach a woman when she is among her friends. He doesn't want to be turned down and he definitely doesn't want to be turned down in front of a group of people.
So there you have it. Smile, eye contact, spend some time alone so you're approachable. If all else fails and you're feeling brave, start a conversation with someone and or ask him to dance.

I've been dealing with this forever. It never changes.
If you want to meet people, you have to be willing to say hello. Then tell them your name.
Normally that's all it takes.
Or you could ask someone to dance. Should have the same effect.
