A tropical fish tank is always nice to have, but at ages 2,3 and 4 the children will want to feed/take care of/pet a classroom animal.
One year my kindergartner's voted on a parakeet - VERY messy....this year we have a white mouse. It is extremely easy to handle and feed. The kids LOVE him and can help with changing paper and food/water in the cage.
PS I bought him at PetSmart for $16.00 - the cage and extras were about $35.00.
GOOD LUCK! (-:

Try a fish or bird.... at least that way you wouldnt have to find out if someone is allergic to cats or dogs!! When I was little our kinder garden class had a bird and a big glass aquarium of monarch butterflies which we watched from a worm to the point when we got to go outside and watch them fly away... it was pretty cool. I'm now almost 21 and I still remember watching them fly off, it was awesome.

Fish. They're easy, and they're pretty.
Turtles. I remember reading something about turtles being natural carriers for salmonella. So, you might want to check that out.
Hermit Crab. Very easy, you just have to provide the shells as they grow.
Caterpillars in the Spring might be fun. The kids would see the turn into butterflies and then release them. Also, it would be short term, and you wouldn't have the responsibility of cleaning, etc.
Good luck with your decision.

For two years have had hermit crabs in our class room. During play time we got them out of the tank and left them crawl around on the floor. There were only a few children who wanted to pick them up, and we told them that they had to be careful of their claw. We did not have any problems with them. The ages of our children were a couple of three year olds and mostly four and five year olds.

A cat, they're calm. Preferably a declawed cat you'd find at a shelter.. it's bad to declaw, I know, but it's worse to have a bunch of children being wounded each day and having their parents sue! Cat's are sweet. I have one, he can learn tricks, he's very good with my puppy who is as wild as can be. A young dog would be too crazy, they're young puppy nails tend to scratch too. But cat's can take care of themselves. If you don't want to go with something so big, then get an aquarium and let them feed the fish.

Hola.
