My stepdaughter has Windows 95 on an older computer in her room. There are errors on start up pertaining to "1mouse" and it states that we must reinstall windows. Rather than reinstalling 95, I would prefer to install a new copy of Windows 98se. I can't seem to find any instruction that will help me do this. Currently her computer will only run in safe mode, which does not recognize her CD-rom so I feel stuck as I cannot even get the 95 CD to be recognized. Can anyone help on the following questions?

1. What steps would I need to go about to remove Windows 95?

2. Where can I find instructions on installing Windows 98SE.

Thanks in advance!

Hey everyone! Thanks a bunch! She isn't at all concerned about losing data on her computer currently so that is not an issue. I've tried a few things and nothing seems to be working yet but I'll keep trying!.

OK, if you don't care too much about the data on the drive, this is what I'd do.

Go to http://www.bootdisk.com and make a Win98SE startup disk on a floppy. This will give you CD-ROM support, from which you can run the Win98SE CD. Format and partition the drive like you want it using the "fdisk" and "format" commands. Then run the setup from the CD to start the install.

If you look hard enough by searching on Google or Yahoo with the following terms: "Windows 98" install format
...you should find more instructions.

The point is that you can't just upgrade the Win95 install to 98 unless you have the right UPGRADE disc versions. Plus it's not a good idea, since a lot of the junk in the registry from your old install will get carried over causing it to run slower and have many of the same problems.
