It's just the new version of the Windows brand OS.
It's kind of broken still and I've tried it and HATE it. (No more folders, gah!)
My partner's rule of thumb is to wait until the first service pack comes out to even think about trying a new OS.

For you, no, it wouldln't be worth it. I was a beta tester. Vista is more complex, but faster. Just a little bit. It has great security, but you have to disable most of the security in order to administer the machine. Wait for Service Pack 1 or 2. Then, it'll be ready. There is, in addition, very little software that is Vista certified. You might get your current programs to work in "compatibility mode" or NOT. Stay with XP for a year or so.

Vista is the new Microsoft OS. It's in Beta right now and should be out later this month. There will be 5 different versions of it, 2 for home use, 2 for business, and 1 for business/entertainment. Check out Microsoft's site, http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvista/. Usually I wait about a year before installing any OS from Microsoft to let them work out the bugs.

Windows Vista capable means it's capable of running the core features of Vista. It can't handle the fancy stuff. The buzz about Vista is that it's going to have more graphics and handle more stuff. If you're a casual PC user, it's not really worth it unless you do stuff that literaly "burns up" your computer (like movie-making).
