They either went in opposite directions - away from eachother, or they left at different 9 o'clocks (9am and 9pm, or 9:00 on different days).

They left from different time zones. One train for instance left from Denver at 9a.m. and one from L.A. This would mean that the L.A. train left two hours earlier than the Denver one.
