Backpacks are very vulnerable to pickpockets, normally whilst roaming the souks and bazaars of Morocco but, increasingly, on the Tube in London, too.
Wearing your pack 'back to front' lets you keep an eye on it.
Also allows you to carry two at once [one each side].

Some mothers wear rucksack type things on the front to keep their baby in. In this case it is entirely acceptable as they want to make sure baby is ok!

there is no defence for wearing a rucksack really is there??
but if you had to wear one i think i would wear mine on the front in case i fell over. I would be ded scared of ending up stuck like a beetle on its back with legs kicking :-/

It depends... there are some stylish ones, and over weight people don't usually look right in them. It's also okay to wear them when you're exercising, to hold your cell phone and keys and stuff...

I'm curious as to why it bothers you?? No, I dont even own a rucksack so its not me doing it...the mugging/pickpocket comments make sense tho.

I do it when I have a large rucksac on my back and need to carry a smaller one as well - such as when I am backpacking

I can that's exactly what i did when we were on the las ramblas in Barcelona place is full of pickpockets !
