"lol" is short for "laugh out loud" and is used mostly in email or text messages. It is not word in itself, but a 'shortcut' for lazy people in writing. It is meant to convey laughing at something funny when you can't hear a person laugh. If you send someone a joke by text or email and they send back "lol! that was great!" it means you made them laugh.
