If your riding a bike on the road after dusk then it doesn't matter what the law says. If you want to live use lights. the more the merrier. Led flashing lights are cheap as, and last for ages.

Whether it's required or not, it's a good idea to have front and rear lights on your bike when you ride at night.

"Every bicycle operated upon any highway during darkness shall be equipped with the following:

1. A lamp emitting a white light which illuminates the highway and is visible from a distance of 300 feet to the front and the sides of the bicycle.

2. A red reflector mounted on the rear of the bicycle and visible from 500 feet to the rear of the bicycle.

3. A white or yellow reflector mounted on each pedal visible 200 feet to the front and rear of the bicycle and a white or red reflector on each side to the rear of the center of the bicycle, except bicycles which are equipped with reflectorized tires on the front and the rear need not be equipped with side reflectors. All reflectorized tires must meet DMV requirements."

I am a Florida Sailor, and law as I allways read em said 30mins Before Dusk and 30 minutes After Sunrise. And yes, a Bicycle should have all the running lights as a Motorcyle, well pretty much. Mind you I said Running Lights, that means Front and Rear Display Lights so that you can be seen.

In NYS, a white front light and red rear light are required 30 minutes before sunrise and 30 minutes after sunset. Even if it's not required by law, it's a good idea to have them anyway. And a reflective vest and reflective leg bands wouldn't hurt either. If you do a lot of night riding, don't go cheap on the lights. You can't put a price on safety. You not only want to be seen , but if anyone's walking along the side of the road, you want to be able to see them, too.

If you don't want to live, you don't need lights.
