British wine is as some have said traditionally a wine made from imported juice concentrate. It was bloody awful and not worth a light.

English wines are made from locally grown grapes and there are some fantastic ones nowadays.

I have had an excellent dry red from the Bearsted vineyard in Bearsted, Kent.

The term "British wines" refers not to wine grown in England but rather to the historic, mostly fortified, wines made elsewhere but much drunk by the British and made by companies often owned by British interests and world-popularized by the British, the most common being sherries, ports and madeiras. None are dry and
red.

"English wines" refers to wines made from grapes actually grown in Britain. Almost all are white. There are a few red hybrid and hybrid-vinifera varieties, none of which are very good at last tasting.

British wine is usually imported grape juice that is fermented here, attracting less tax. I haven't seen it in a long time though. There was one particular brand that was popular in the fifties and still about in the sixties. Was that called Emva Cream? That's the name that comes into my head.but I might be inadvertently maligning a proper sherry.
