The washing the hair part, your only suppost to not wash it when you first get it, so people that think that you can never wash dreads are crazy. Why would anyone want dreads if you could never wash them. Lemon Might work, but remeber if its in summer the bugs will get you. (i tryed to put lemon once to make my hair healthy, and the bugs outside were scary). Anotherthing, take good care of ur dreads. i had a sibeling (still have) that had dreads (no longer) and after half a year they got really tangled. make sure u wax them or keep the rooled properly..or else you will get a big mass of tangeldness...

It is not true that you cant wash it. Read about it on the site below:
"Rumor: You do not wash dreadlocks. Hair must be dirty to dread.
Fact: If you do not wash your hair it will stink. Dreadlocked hair needs to be washed regularly just like un-dreaded hair. You can wash dreads just as you would wash a sponge, by working the soap in and then squeezing and rinsing repeatedly to get all the soap out. Clean hair will actually lock up faster than dirty or oily hair. Because nearly every soap and shampoo on the market contains residues it was thought that clean hair does not dread quickly, when in fact it is the residues (conditioners, moisterizers, builders and fragrance holders) in the soaps that prevent hair from locking up. This is why we reccommend washing you dreads only in residue free soaps and shampoos."

I have dreadlocks...my hair doesn't smell bad at all. I also NEVER stopped washing my hair. I faithfully wash my hair every other day, sometimes more. I let my locks come in naturally, I did not have them "put in". This is my second set...the first set I had for 4 years...no smells, always clean. You can email me with any questions.

I think you can get it wet. So why not just let water run through it in the shower for a long while without using shampoo? I think the acid in lemon juice could be very bad for hair.

Go too www.dreadhead.com. Or is it www.dreadheads.com.? Anyway, they sell a residue-free soap for dreadlocks. Buy it.
Lemon may or may not get rid of the smell, but you've got to clean it.

vinegar works also. when my dog sits in the rain day after day and starts getting his hair green with mold and that stinks. I use a mixture of bleach and water on him and that works really well for about a month
