Actually, it's the screen resolution that's the most important factor. HD ready means the TV has a screen resolution of *at least* 1280 x 720 pixels (although they're usually 1388 x 768) and can display HD media. Full HD has a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels.
The best full HD LCD around at the moment are:
Samsung F71 range
Toshiba WLT66 range
Sharp XD1E range
You should always ensure that an HD TV has at least one HDMI port (preferably two) and the resolution is 1080p (progressive scan). A digital tuner is a big plus, and a lot of retailers now sell large screens with a 5 year warranty, which I would definitely get.

The answer that proceeds me is correct; you must have a tuner built-in the HD TV to receive the over-the-air HD and SD signals --remember(!) HD is FREE in areas where you can receive your local NBCs, ABCs, FOX, etc. stations. The HD TVs that has a built-in HD decoder tuner will allow you to see and hear beautiful HD pictures without a satellite or cable box. The likes of DirecTV or Comcast cable DOES give you MORE HD though.
Go to online forums like AVS or CEDIA.org site and read some of the basic, "What makes a good HD TV". Stay away from the cheapest brands though - you DO get what you pay for I feel.
Hope this helps.

An HD TV has a built in HD Tuner, and an HD Ready TV can display HD resolution but does not have a tuner. It is basically just an HD monitor. You will need an HD cable box or a stand alone HD TV tuner to view HD programs.

Hd tvs have the tuner built into the unit. Hd ready requires the extra cost of purchasing a tuner for your tv.

The best way to pick a new tv is to use your own judgement not others. Visit stores and look at the picture quality. Trust your own eyes. Also, what will you be hooking up to the tv? Make sure it has all the inputs and outputs you will need.
