I'm looking for a small breed of dog that doesn't shed. I have two children (4yrs and 8mos) and the dog would also have to be good with kids. We recently had a miniature schnauzer and it was great, but I don't want to spend $1000 on a dog. I want to adopt one from the shelter, but everytime they get a small dog it's gone ASAP. Can anyone provide me with some resources in Northeast Indiana?

I am not in your area, but you can try calling the local Humane Society and telling them what you are looking for. There are often multiple dog rescue groups you can contact and you can sometimes put your name on a 'waiting list' for a particular type of dog. If you want a non-shedding, you might try for a poodle mix, a straight poodle, minipinzer, schnauzers, even labs. Do some research on the various breeds and see what seems to sound good - most 'mutts' are good with kids, but know that most dogs shed, at least to some degree.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned a Bichon Frise...they don't shed, same as poodles. We had one that was very sweet with the kids. We now have a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel...he was expensive and sheds a litte, but he is the BEST dog, and worth it! DO NOT buy from a pet store or puppy mill. Reputable breeders are the way to go because they are trying to maintain best traits and health in their puppies. Petfinder.com is probably the best site I know for finding pet in a shelter, but try to find out about background if you can. Also, I think when we were deciding on a breed, we checked out purina.com's pet selector. Good luck!

There is a list of all dog breeds that don't shed/ have dander issues for allergies on this blog. Great list!

I adopted a Shiz Tzu from my shelter and I would never had considered the breed, before. A truly marvelous pup.

You have set of an avalanche - everybody will tell you about their own favorite breed. There is no such as a short haired, non shedding dog. You will have to get it groomed at lest every 6 weeks. As far as temperament goes, a lot of that is training. When you pick out your dog make sre it is laid back but friendly. My cocker has al the traits you ask for and her breed is not generally known to be quiet. Lissa is though. I can take her anywhere and she will behave herself like a lady.

You may try petfinder.com.....you can find a lot of different dogs there....in your area.
Some are at no cost or for a small adoption fee....if you don't want to spend a lot.
Puddles are the only dogs that don't shed...unless you get a hairless.

I don't have any resources for you but I do suggest a poodle or anything mixed with a poodle, I have a cavalier king charles cross poodle and he doesn't shed much even when I brush him

You need to find a hypo allergenic dog eg. Lhapsa Apso, poodles, shitsues, schnauzers, Airedales, wheaten terriers.

I would suggest going to a breeder for your dog

Dachaunds (I can't spell it... weenie dogs)

They're great, they're relatively small, they aren't "yippee" dogs, they have short hair and don't shed much, they're common (you can usually find them at a pet store, pound, and/or the newspaper). I grew up with one, and he was good with babies/kids, and so were my cousins' dogs of the same breed.
